Turbo for GQ Diesel with big kays?

I am considering having a turbo kit fitted to my 4.2 Diesel GQ wagon, it has done just under 450,000k's and hasn't had a spanner on the motor, gearbox or transfer case. What are the pitfalls of this with that many kays on the clock, will it bother the old girl?

you have checked the images of Woops rebuilt TD42 below?
550,000 and still see the original cross hatching in the bores...

But then, I wouldnt put one on at 550,000klms.... asking for problems.

COULD be a bit risky with that sort of K's if engine hasnt been looked after--reg oil changes etc. You should at least remove sump and check engine bearing clearances. If they are nearly worn out, theres no point in adding a turbo unless they are replaced.

Thanks for the replies, it has been serviced by the same bloke religously from brand new, it belonged to my dad who is fanatical about servicing (gladly I have inherited that), who put about 400,000 on it and then I brought it off him. Has had a set of injectors done a while ago and that is all, has been a great vehicle. Just would like a bit more punch for towing and 4WDing, so thought turboing it would be the next step? Any other suggestions?

bang is the only word that comes to mind i would not do it at that many kms

Ask Daniel at Rally how much they put Chris Richters td42 through when they raced it, Think that had well over 400,000 on it got well thrashed and is still going.

LOL.....I did turbo it, actually I turbo'd it at 505,000k's and am still flogging the piss out of it, running 12psi of boost and pump turned up, its still going as good as ever, just keep the oil fresh is the trick. It gets a little bit hot doing circle work (will post up a vid soon) but thats to be expected! 454 going in very soon.

Absolutely a great example of how tuff they are, that motor is still going in that truck down here, and it really goes too, i think the new owners won vic winch in it didn't they?

put mine on at 440 000 and have been running 25 psi since now 550 000 and still going strong :twisted:

25psi. Thats crazy mate. Has the engine had any work done in that time? Bearings or strenghtening of any sort?
I'm hoping to run about 15psi with the use of water to air cooler. If the standard GU pump will keep up.
Should know in the next week or so when finished on the dyno.

no work when i first put it on did not even have an inter cooler for 12 months but after 24 months or so ported the head as wanted more power as for bottom end has never been touched :twisted: still going strong is dayly driver on free way and weekend it just gets thrashed :twisted: oh and stock gq fuel pump

Mine is all stock motor running 17psi, til new turbo is fitted.

Remember normal driving will rarely see more the 10psi, only if giving it a hard time will it rise.

Sorry to Hijack the threar. but is 280,000K's ok to throw a turbo on, not going insane setup, just want more power. have a T3 high mount manifold (think its DTS or MTQ) so just looking at a smallish T3 to get more torque out of her for up hill work

As bogged said depends on condition of motor.

I have stripped a td42 with 680k and looked new, I have also seen td42 with 220k that was stripped for rebuild that was badly worn.

Get a compression test done first, this will give a good indication as to engine condition.

some companies do not reckon putting a turbo on engines with 250k + but i would just give it a compression test and make sure the motor is A1 ....

think of it this way even a badly worn engine will be ok as the extra cylinder pressure will push the rings out harder against the bores and it will use less oil and run better :lol:

never understand that.

i'd be more worried about the condition of the bearings and crank journals and the condition of the oil pump.
sure with worn rings it wont make as much power, but it's hardly going to make it explode.

They talk crap. That would mean you should pull your turbo off at 250K or rebuild the engine every 250K. These aren't Toyota engines do they realise? The TD42 was a turbo built engine from the start designed for small buses and light trucks. My mate just put one on his TD42 its done over 500K.

How does a stock GQ pump keep up with 25psi
i have an EFI fuel pump with a fuel reg pushing fuel up to it and the fuel screw is as far in as it can go and it dose the job the black smoke all the way to 4500-5000 says there is plenty of fuel :cool:

Mine with 290,000 probably should have the turbo removed!
Do a comp. test and take it from there.
Standard turbo with fuel and boost adjustments shouldn't be too much for it.
Standard pump is supposed to be good for 130kw so I'm told, early GU anyway.

Got any more details on whats been done to the turbo? Mines a stock VG30DET unit and i wouldn't mind getting it high-flowed and replacing the turbine wheel with a steel one at some stage.

rb25 exhaust with vg30 inlet mate , yea steel wheel is the go dont make the mistake most people make going to big on the exhaust . these things have heaps of touque once they are up in rev's so a smalla turbo will boost at lower rpm getting you there fast
