4.8 patrol anyone got one what do they think
im looking at buying a 4.8 patrol petrol any advice would be great .What u think good and bad .I know they are a bit thirsty but i dont care had a petrol 80 series that chewed fuel like nothing
I had one with the 5 speed auto and it was a brilliant truck. Only sold it as it was a company based car and couldn't afford the lease payments after being made redundant.
Issues none. Save fuel of course. But lets put that into proper perspective and see what YOU think. My best fuel consumption was about 18l/100k's or in fact just under. My worst from memory was only ever about 26. This was from my fuel card statements and odometer readings wee accurate. Average was I think about 22. There was a bloke I discussed with a lot on the patrol forum with a manual who was regularly getting in the 16's by running 255/85x16's and a few little weight reduction tips like winch but no bullbar etc. My figures come from running 35" muddies fulltime and 4" lift and various 4wding, city, highway and sand driving. Towing a 1800kg offroad van I got highway figures around 22l/100k's and I could pass roadtrains at 140kph straight and steady as a rock with no towing hitch aids etc.
Only engine mods I did was extractors and full exhaust system from Beaudesert Exhausts which I think made a good improvement to the overall power and economy. Local dyno showed 125kw at the wheels with the 35's.
By all accounts they run fine on gas. Why did I not go gas - fuel was cheaper back then, company paid a proportion of the fuel, all costs were salary sacrificed, but mostly gas off the east coast was a pain in the arse to source and the Patrol range on gas due to tank size and consumption is apparently only about 350-380k's.
Would I still have one. In a minute if I could afford the lease payment or own outright. I had buyers knocking down my door when I advertised it for sale.
Of course the decision is yours!!!!!!
Oh and if you buy one with ABS I've got a Piranha dual battery tray for one I never installed you can buy cheap.

Have seen a few of the later ones for sale with gas. From the latest shape on the arn`t sold with duel tanks.I was told it was for emisions doesn`t make much sence to me.The 4.8 auto gets pretty good fuel for a petty down the hyway ( They come out with 3.9s) and sit on 1200 at 100.Having said that my wife gets neally twice the fuel econamy out of it than I do.I know of one running an autronic in a shorty, auto with a turbo kit that gets very reasonable fuel.Manuals seem to come out with 4.3s and sit on 2700,These are exellent with fuel,They drink Heaps of it!For a power house without a motor transplant heaps of fun.Thair like a grown up gtr motor.Daily driver, in my opinion stick with the auto.Cheers Billy

so nearly 3 times the fuel per 100 kms as a navara or BT50 t/diesel Lucky fuels soo cheap.fester2au wrote:I had one with the 5 speed auto and it was a brilliant truck. Only sold it as it was a company based car and couldn't afford the lease payments after being made redundant.

85 high roof 1.3, 6.5 tc, air lockers, ruf and 34 swampers. yep its an ugly pos.
Yeah talk about left field comparisons. May as well compare a 4.8 Patrol to a Suzuki Seirra.
Mine certainyl didn't drink that much more fuel in the real world on a trip as a mate's 4.2 TDI IFS Cruiser and when you take into account how much dearer diesel was at that time as well as his purchase price and servicing costs I certainly wasn't out of pocket.
Compare the available power to fuel consumption ratio of a 4.5 Cruiser and as stated the 4.2 and 4.5 petrol Patrols and see where you are at. Comparing a full size big six petrol wagon to a dual cab 4 cyl diesel ute is a bit off track in this question really.
Also compare it to my old 3.4l V6 Prado which sure had better economy but shit power for it's actual consumption. From memory it was hard to get it below 16-17l/100 for about 125kw (manufacturer quoted).
One good thing about the 4.8 Patrol is consumption doesn't actually change that much when you start loading it up and towing etc unlike the 3.0l TDi Patrol that can nearly double it's figures.

4.8 patrol
I have the 2003 Ti with the 4.8lt. I traded in my wifes 2002 statesman with 5.8lt for it 12 months ago. The fuel economy is about the same as the statesman but i can go bush and up the beach with this one. The power is brilliant in the patrol. It is that good I actualy spent today pulling trees out of the ground on my property and some trees where a good size. The wife was not real happy to see what I was doing with the patrol until she saw how easy it was pulling them out, so she came and drove it for me so i could hook up the chains quicker. I don't think my hilux would have been able to do this.
I have had a quote to put it on gas and was told about $3800 but I have not got it done yet , but I will when I get around to it.
We are going away next friday for a holliday and I am going to tow my parents 17 feet van 300ks, so it will be good to see how much fuel it uses,

One of my best mates has one and we go up the beach camping with the wives and kids.
His is completely stock apart from a front bar, it's an auto, and it's very much unstoppable on the beach. He tows a camper trailor that weighs 1600kg or so onto the beach and you don't even know it's there. I had the opportunity to drive it on the beach recently and it bloody goes alright. If you start to sink or bog, just stomp the gas and power wins over traction everytime.
Downside is that he averages about 25L/100klm on bitumen. Up the beach in 4wd it does about 30-40L/100klm. They've done mechanical work on it recently and managed to get it down to about 20L/100klm on bitumen.
