Range Rover DRIVE issues

I just didnt wanna drive it around to much as I can salvage bits and peices from my old box to palm off on here to people that may need them ? ? ?
Or is that a dumb idea aswell ? ? ?
Rick hasnt seen the problem but he thinks it a clutch pack gone aswell and time for a full overhaul, I said "How much?" he said "1700-3500" i said "Fark that, you got a lighter"
I gonna take it to a transmission specialist aslong as its safe to be drivin around with it farked like it is I dont mind

Auto boxes can only be rebuilt by people who really know what they are doing.... I have seen an auto box on a work bench that my uncle was trying to fix my years ago and it looked like a jigsaw puzzle...( probably still in peaces btw)
Clutch packs are very cheap but it the time invovel pulling the damn fing apart and then getting it all back togeather...
BTW jaguar use the same zf as LR but the clutch packs they use are much stronger the the LR ones. bloke who say they have beffed there ZF up use mean they have rebuilt it with Jaguar Parts....
Triumph Rover Spares in SA sell goodish 2nd hand autos (just make sure you get the modle number and when u do get make sure it's what u ordered!!)
You must have drivin yr rangie like a minga to break the ZF!!
TD5 96 Discovery UTE.
On the ZF's the 'widget' on the output shaft gets blocked with clutch pack material. The widget controls the shifting by sensing output shaft speed (or something like that, 'widget' is the correct LR term for the thingy I'm talking about)
Remove the tcase, remove the extension housing off the gbox, remove spud shaft and I think the park b]pawl, remove 'widget' (fits onto output shaft and has a bearing on the outside of it). Clean it out or get a new one, renew filter and oil. Should get it going but it wont last long.
Search online and you will come up with a pommy specialist (ashcroft?)who has an online faq/diags that will explain.
Box is on the way out, like your mate says the clutch packs are stuffed or very close.
Get it rebuilt if you want any sort of guarantee. If buying from a wrecker your playing your odds and from past experience with things like autos from wreckers its a pretty big gamble unless they can give you some indication of age and use or a warranty that they will honour.

I still think you are better off having it overhauled. like anyhting second ahnd, it's a risk and unless you pick up a real bargain, it's not worth the effort.
The old man's ZF is getting a partial rebuild (new torque converter and clutch packs), and the rest of f the box is in good nick (so the tranny specalist reckons). Yours may only need a few things done, but if you can, go the total overhaul. It's not cheap, but at least you have that department sorted out and that's another hurdle conqured
The Turbo 400 idea sounds like too much pissin' about I reckon.

Take your RR to a Auto specialist (like landy man said) and get their thoughts on whats wrong, if it means rebuild of either auto or tansfercase, then i suggest you look for a ZF and LT230 second hand (try someone like triumph rover spares), if you can get one out of a newer disco would be better. Then fit this, It will be WAY better than what you have now...Espeically the Transfercase !!! Viscous is pretty crappy in strength, and my personnal opinion of them is they are a bad design.

A well looked after fairly light duty ZF (not off road basher) should be expected to get around 300K out of it (going on what I have read and heard) so you haven't gone too badly, if you run big rubber and give it a flogging and the car has seen a fair bit of city driving then 260K is pretty close to 300 so you did ok.
I would give the LT95/LT230 combo a miss as it is noisy and I while strong the 4th gear is a bit tall and makes the car rev a bit high @ cruising speeds (100Km/h) I had a overdrive on my old rangie which reduced the revs by about 500rpm and was really noisy but saved fuel. It was a weak link in the drive train IMO and if it every shat itself then I would have been going home on the back of a tilt tray. (something I never have had happen with my 1976 rangie)
Stick with the zf and lt230 get them fixed and you will be fine.
Noise wont bother me as between the Exhaust tires and steroeo the drive train noise would be just like another musical instrument

I dont drive to hard and it was abit low on oil but not real low Stoopid thing

I agree with Micheal here, the Zf is as good as you get when it comes to off-road auto boxes. Like anyhting, regular service gives the best life.
I would strongly advise against going back to a manual. I almost did this when my ZF dropped it's bundle and looked at a R380, but I stuck with the auto and I am glad I did.
