cb aerial

hi i was wondering if i wired up a cb aerial to my up to sterio will i have better reception due to the fact that my radio isnt very clear and its not the speackers because when i play cds it is very clear is there any one else with this problem

hi try it and see if it werks cos thats how you find fings out about your car and stuff ariels are just bits of wire n stuff so it mite werk real good or mite not just try it and see if it werks

get a life and just answer the questions or shut up. this is the second time tonight you've contributed absolutely nothing worthwhile to forum. so there's a couple of spelling errors and so forth. the request is still plain enough to understand and warrants an answer.

It would most likely be easier to look at your existing antenna and cable into the head unit and upgrading. Replacing the stock antenna to a better antenna is relatively cheap.

also, what head unit are you using?

If by "CB antenna" you mean a 27MHz antenna, then you 'might' find the performance just OK (keep in mind that AM radio is centered at around 1MHz and FM radio is centered around 100Mhz). If you are thinking about using a UHF CB antenna (centered at 477MHz) then thats a bad idea...

Assuming that the antenna is the problem (and not your receiver) then the best option is to inspect your existing antenna and coax cable, and ensure it is terminated and connected correctly, with no joins in the coax cable. If its still no good after that, then head down to your local SuperCrap, Repco or Autobarn store and grab a new AM/FM antenna setup for less than a slab of beer.

Combined AM-FM-CB antennas are no longer in mass production for a very good reason. Keep away from them!

If you have an old cb aerial around give it a try it will probably work fine, but if you are going to buy something just get a standard am/fm aerial (or find out what the problem with your one is)

One more thing (at the risk of making this thread TOO technical

)

Car radios are designed to work with 75ohm coax cables. CB antennas and CB coax cables are 50ohm. If you use the 50ohm CB coax to feed your 75ohm car radio, there will be significant attenuation of the signals you are trying to receive (i.e. you will possibly have poor reception).

Having said that, if your current AM/FM antenna system has a major problem, then even a 27MHz CB antenna with 50ohm coax 'might' work better than what you have now....

Just something else for you to think about!
