Ok after spending all day out trolling the car yards of southeast QLD I’ve finally settled on a 100 series cruiser for my next truck (Patrols were too small and uncomfortable, I’m 6’6”). It will be used for daily driver towing a 6x4 tool trailer and as a weekend/holiday tourer towing a customline camp trailer. Problem is I can’t decide on the power plant, either the 4.2L 1HZ diesel or the 4.5L 1FZFE Petrol!!!
These are the problems I see –
1HZ – VERY slow and under powered (was flat out driving its self around on the test drive, let alone being loaded up with a trailer!)
1FZFE – Nice power delivery, much more lively, smoother, But can just tell that it is much thirstier motor.
Both problems have fixes, add a turbo to the 1HZ, or add a gas setup to the 1FZFE but I’m not sure which is the best way to go.
Scenario 1. Add a turbo to the 1HZ, cost between $3000-$4000, end result roughly around 125 kw @ 3400 rpm and 390 nm @ 2000 rpm and roughly 14-16L per 100KM (these power figures are only slightly more then the new hilux diesel D4D in a much heavier car)
After researching the turbo conversions for the 1HZ I’ve found that they can lead to premature failure of the motor by damaging the pistons and requiring a total rebuild (Big $$$ for a diesel). Has anyone else heard of, or experienced this? I’m slightly concerned with putting a turbo on a non turbo designed motor. What is the best turbo kit on the market for power and RELIABILITY?
Scenario 2. Add gas to the 1FZFE, Cost $2000 after gov rebate, end result 165 kw @ 4600 rpm and 387 nm @ 3600 rpm. As for fuel/gas mileage I’ve been told anywhere between 18-28L per 100 km!!!
This set up would give me the most power but I’ll be paying for it at the pump. Can anyone with a 1FZFE cruiser out there give me an idea what the fuel mileage is like and with what sort of loads? The other negative is that the 1FZFE will have a shorter touring range between fill ups as the gas is consumed faster then unleaded. Has anyone out there had any experience with injected lpg set ups? Are they better then the carby style set ups?

Also is there any thing else I have missed that I should know before buying a 100 series?

I'm running a dual fuel 1fzfe with the standard main fuel tank and a 108ltr usable gas I'm getting upto 1300kms touring range pulling a 5.25mtr boat and camping gear (including towing the boat over Mount Hotham). Lucky to get 4km to the litre around town on gas but still cheaper than diesel in the area of overall running costs. I'm also running a flashlube kit to provide some upper cylinder lubricant and ease the problem of valve regression.

i have an 80 series with the 1hz fair enough its not as quick as a petrol but then again diesels arent ment to be quick as they are a low reving motor but they will keep going long after a petrol is dead mine has 546000km on it at the moment and is still going strong it will accelerate up most hills in 4th gear and i tow a 15 ft half cab boat around as well and i would get around 1000km on the 2 factory fuel tanks which is about 125lt (i think)

Are you saying that your getting around 700(750) to 800 out of your standard tank,I'd be guessing around 350 400 tops out of your "108" useable L gas tank. I rely on 450km out of my standard tank but bank on 400 and 300 out of my 100L 80L usable gas tank when in remote places when towing 800-1000kg camper on 35's with FZFE an auto....
Running 2.5 inch exhaust, increased the base timing, closed loop gas and trying to keep the speed around or below the 100km/h mark. My cruiser seems to be better on a trip than around town. If they are that's only a combined consumption of 15.23L per 100 km (or 6.6 km per Litre) this is working on 90L of fuel and 108L of gas. Seems low for a petrol??? What else is done to your motor?

Are you saying that your getting around 700(750) to 800 out of your standard tank,I'd be guessing around 350 400 tops out of your "108" useable L gas tank. If your getting those km's out of your FZFE I want your hints and mods coz that would kill a diesel..

Gas tank is 120ltr regularly takes 108ltrs only running 31" or 33" tyres.

Guys, have a 100 GXL running dul fuel for last 7 years...tank capacity 108/110L witha range of 500 klms towing 3000kg caravan at around 85/90k, without van range increases to 800 klms....about 18 months ago fitted additional fuel tanks (72L) which provides Sydney/Brisbane - Sydney/Melbourne in one go minus van. Motor stock, but am presently considering a chip plus exhaust mods and dyno.........any thoughts or advice greatly received as all up cost is about $1500 each with an anticipated power increase of 10-15 klws so I`m told.
