Hey, tossing up between a 74 series and 80 series turbo diesel. Looking to travel up to the cape, do sand driving, and some hard 4wdriving...will probs put 33s and 3-4 inch lift in both...what would you recommend?(exclude price in decision)...i understand 80 series are more comfortable with coil springs etc...but is that about it..will 74 series be more than enough seeing it wont be a daily driver..on trips looking at 2-3 people....
what would you guys recommend?the good and the bad (if there are any) for the two trucks...

74 series turbo diesel vs 80 series turbo diesel

80s are much more comfortable over long distance, more expensive to buy and more expensive on fuel etc... and rego and everything else
the 70 will be fine... but the 80 will have so much more space and comfort, it really is worth the extra... and they drive so much nicer..

80 wins. if you find a 24 valve turbo 80, it will use less fuel than the 74, especially on the highway, they are slightly more aerodynamic and not a lot heavier. the 80 transmission is stronger and has deeper reduction in low range, the 6 cylinder motor is so much smoother and more powerful, you can tow or cruise at high speeds and almost never have to drop out of top gear. the torque spread is better, the 13B-T is very peaky, it's a great motor but at full noise it's waiting, waiting, waiting, bam, redline, next gear, do it all again; the 1HD-T is far more driveable with excellent low RPM torque, the 1HD-FT is less responsive down low however revs out amazingly for a medium sized diesel and never feels like it's out of breath.
the middy is only good for 2 people to tour in, the 80 will handle 3 in comfort with plenty of gear.
the 80 is more comfortable and more capable off-road, more stable and less fatiguing to drive. if money is no object, it really is a no-brainer.

it's your money drive a couple of each and see how you feel. the 80 is better both on and off road, you get what you pay for. you will eventually grow out of a middy but you'll never grow out of the 80, so although you'll spend more up front, you'll keep it for longer so replacement cost os further off.
