I know this has been done, but :
Can someone steer me to a thread that outlines a 60 series power steering conversion.
AND
Front disc brake conversion.
Appreciate any help !
Cheers
I've got a '76 FJ40 with a 308, 5 speed gearbox running 35's. Its time to make things a little more driver friendly.

for your front disc swap if you can find a later model 40's diff with discs, just swap it in and swap the MC too, as for the 60's PS, off the top of my head you need, 60's box, 75 arms and tie rods, 55 steering coloumn (although I used a 60's column to get indicators etc on it) 75 intermediate shaft (this one has to be cut roughly 200mm and resplined), the drivers side shock mount needs to be flipped around and shaved to clear the uni joint on the PS shaft/box
heres a few pics from my swap, also check out www.3rdrock4x4.com and http://www.ih8mud.com/cruisertech.php they might help.
box mounted
clearance between shock tower adn joint
original vs cut down steering column
the 2 shafts after cutting and resplining

Is it beer o'clock yet??
WOW.. I just used a non-power steer bundera shaft and bolted it to a plate... nice work... but I bet mine was cheaper for same results...aussie_stu wrote:for your front disc swap if you can find a later model 40's diff with discs, just swap it in and swap the MC too, as for the 60's PS, off the top of my head you need, 60's box, 75 arms and tie rods, 55 steering coloumn (although I used a 60's column to get indicators etc on it) 75 intermediate shaft (this one has to be cut roughly 200mm and resplined), the drivers side shock mount needs to be flipped around and shaved to clear the uni joint on the PS shaft/box

How much was it to respline the shaft???
hands and mums dont count!!!
I used a 55 series steering column, coupled with an 80 series flexible steering coupler (although I replaced the flexible rubber with a stainless steel plate), then I used a 75 series steering intermediate shaft to go down to the steering box. It will all fit nicely, but the 55 series steering column is about an inch longer than the original, so I shortened it and had it resplined at the steering wheel end.
you flip the shock tower to put the steering box in the right spot, scotto sent me the measurement of his box from the front of chassis, but I've lost it since, but you can get an idea where it sits from the above pics.vk7ybi wrote:Why is it necessary to flip the shock tower and which selection of shafts will fit without shortening?
