Id think you would want something with a bit more weight than a Navara.
Ive towed my hilux a few times with my navara and yeh it pulls it along no worries but the weight of the hilux [single cab] plus its height on a car trailer makes it not all that safe.
For reference the dual cab d22 navara weighs 2.1 tonne and you would need to upgrade the factory rear springs + all shocks.

what tow rating depends on what your country/state laws say it is.
NZ they are all 3 ton towing and 1 ton load capacity.(tho towing capacity means little, your legally allowed to tow as much as you like provided you can stop in a certain distance) but in aussie that won't apply.

if you have a 3 ton 4x4 to tow plus the 500kg trailer, usually you want some weight on the back of the ute so you can get some traction ! and help stop the ute being kicked around. the weight is getting right up there. i wouldn't recommend constantly towing so much weight.
also keep in mind your max weight for your licence. you may need a truck licence.

I would not be keen on towing a Patrol with a Navara on a regular basis.
This is not legal advice.

thanks for your thoughts tweak'e. its something i haven't considered before. ok so i should limit it to 2800 even though its marked 3000Kg and has car the Qld transport mod plate for Aust complience. they should make it all clearer :) ok

Post by pom300 »

we have a 02 navara str 3.0ltr turbo diesel
it has a 3t towing capacity it tows our 3.3 ton tinny better than our 05 v8 sahara the navaras are an awsome truck and we took it on every track at landcruiser it got stuck and hung up on some stuff but it went hard, cheaper to run than the cruiser aswell

DX D22's are rated at 3t, STR's are rated at 2.8t. ZD30/YD25

VG33E powered models are good for 2t legally. KA24E/DE powered D22's are rated at 1.5t.
