80 Series centre diff lock

Post by Mad Cruiser »

Just came back from LCMP over the weekend, used low range with diff lock. The button on dash was never turned on however the difflock light was on the gauge.

When i changed into High Range for the travel back home, i noticed that all 4 wheels were locked and light still glowing on the dashboard.

Does anyone know how to disconnect this ? i have tried disconnecting the button on the dash and putting back together. Still doesn't work

Hi
The centre difflock is activated either by using the push buttom on the dash or by sellecting low range
If after selectin high range and or turning off the switch and slowly driving the truck the light should go out
The most common reason for the diff staying locked is the use of different tyres either in size or type

dont drive it, Bind up and hard on the tranfers/cv's as there is a mismatch in the front to rear gearing.,

1/
jack up hte front axle and disengage the centre diff buttons etc etc,,
wiggle the front tyres forward and back..if this fixes it, you have issues else where

2/
check the wiring

3/
Failing that, sounds like the solinoide or selector motor has jammed.

BUGGER

4/
Get ya self a part time conversion . wack that in..all better in many different ways...

suggestion

If you have to drive the truck
Drop the front drive shaft as a minimum...
then take off the otter hub drive ends as sometimes she get a howl or crackle up in the cv's
did all this with mine

fix tranfer case

Thats interesting to hear BJ , we had the same problem with my old mans 100, toyota said it was our fault cause we must have engaged the center diff lock at speed. thing is it only gets put in low range and the center lock dosnt get used for high range.

the car sill makes strange grinding noises at 2500rpm

sounds like a mismatch between front and rear as already mentioned.. best bet is to put it on stands and ingage low, then disengage, with centre diff lock button off, and then throw in the clutch after drivin it on stands, should get it sorted id say??? if not wiring is next... get hooked up anywhere or in any holes that would fark sumthin??

Already done that...

Currently in the process of taking off the front tailshaft, started off pretty well..... got the nuts off on transfer end but couldn't get the bolts and nuts on the front diff end to undo. Used an air rattle gun and spanners, also tried a shifter, still won't budge :bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words:

What a POS :bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words:

You have probably lost power to the motor that drives it. Dash light is from switch on transfer and another system altogether. Check fuses/fusable links etc, cant remember exactly what fuse it is on.

Hi
Before you get too carried away
I would suggest that you check all the switches involved, 4 switches
Alos check the mechanical lickage, the high/low lever has been know to come loose under the centre console.
Check power supply as mentioned
If you have a manual there is an external wiring set up to test the motors

if you remove the shift motor take some care, you can then move the shift rail manually, this will show whether or not you have a mecnical problem in the transfer box , not likely though

You need a genuine W/S manuall it has all the test procedures

If the light stays on the transfer is not shifting out of lok, so it is a wiring or electrical failure. Keep trying the front shaft bolts, pull the yoke if you have to and try to jam some wood behind the uni to secure the diff end then tape it up.
