Suzuki Santana 5 Speed

Post by Ash R33 »

G'day guys

I just have a few questions about a 1.0 litre sierra. I have one myself and im pretty happy with it. I think the 1.0 litre does a great job. Its still pretty quick around town the only two things that I would love to fix is

Its gutless at 100km/h I know its not a sports car. Getting up to around 80 it's fine. The smallest rise in the road and it starts to die. I know they are very very hard to find. But would a 5 speed out of a Suzuki SJ410 Santana the 5th gear ratio is .79 and 4th is 1.0. Same as the top gear in my sierra at the moment. Would Santana gear box help much with crusing at 100km/h.

Or

Would getting a set of transfer case gears help with the top speed of my car?

Also if it helps I am running 31 inch tires atm. Not sure what they really measure to as they are getting pretty low on tread.

FACT : if you regulary drive at 100km/hr with a 1ltr 4 spd you will kill your motor

I would say sit on no more than 85-90km/hr for extended highway driving
at 90 your engine is reving at about 4600rpm with redline being about 5000rpm. So do you really want to be driving your car at redline ?

The gears from a 5sp suzuki carry van can be mixed with the 4spd gears
to make a 5 spd hybrid that fits in the 4spd bellhousing.

Are you sure about 5000rpm being the F10A's redline??? It doesn't make peak HP (45HP) until 5500rpm, I would ASSUME that the redline would be around 6000-6500rpm. http://www.4x4.in.th/specification.html

since i havent seen a factory fitted tacho how do you determine a redline? i seem to recal it being like 5500rpm

having said that i was really impressed with this ol lj80 i was driving home from newy to sydney and how it sat at 105kms in the dark with a f8a!
Was 10ks outsite of hornsby when it overheated and blew the head gasket. Later found out it was spining undersized tyres (195/65 from memory) so my rpm was probably up in the 6500 region. assuming it was all stock who wants to do the math?

(i now know better and if i am ever lucky enough to get a second lj it will be 1l 5spd and i will have to find some way to afford it)

pity no one has any tripsplaned to india or spain

On another note, the suzuki jpan website rates the sierra 1l as 52PS /5000rpm (ie 51hp,38kw and 80nm/3500rpm)

If you are running 31's your speedo will be out anyway, and with that size tyre you're pushing the poor thing

I have a 1lL ute that has 215's, purrs along at 100 no prob's (it doesn't like 80, lol) And sure, it dies up hills but so do a lot of other cars. What it lacks on the highway certainly makes up for with its offroad capability :D

Exactly! If you are doing 100 indicated, your closer to 115km/h, not 100% sure what size tyres your had stock, im just using a WT SWB sierra as an example. Doing this to a standard 1L is flogging the poor little hampters inside it runnin on their wheels. Alter the gearing till it is closer to stock. Even if you do get more power, your gearing is still out and it will still not perform as well as it could. Even if you could lower the revs with a 5th gear, because your overall gearing is out it will still not be great to drive. To do 100km/h true speed in a WT SWB sierra with 31's the indicated speed shoud be about 86km/h (not allowing for acutal speedo error, just tyre correction).

Wasn't there something said a while ago on here about maruti 4spds accepting a 5th gear with some modding?
(The maruti being a 1ltr)
Wheeling on completely wicked angles, without even looking stable.

From what I have heard you can convert a 4 speed to 5 speed if you have a later 4 speed (Series 3/4/5 11/84 on) trans and a 1.3 5 speed trans. Take the case assembly, the upper and the lower, the input shaft and the input shaft bearing retainer of the SJ 410 and install the case extension, the forks and the rest of the gears from the Samurai transmission. The hole in the floor needs extending about 1" and the crossmember mounting will also need attention as the Sierra trans is longer than the 1.0. Also the rear of the case needs some machining for a bearing for the 5th gear.

Well I took it for a test flight tonight with the GPS.

at 60km/h im doing roughly 65 to 67 km/h according to the GPS

at 90 km/h i am doing 100. So that made me feel a bit better about the situation.

My Sierra is a 1986 model with the 1.0 motor. Alot of people dont think they exist. But does that mean my gear box could be a chance at fitting a 5th gear into it? Because I have a 5 speed out of a 1.3 down the shed.

Give Mick at Suziworld in Melbourne a call as he knows a bit about this conversion. It sounds like you have the right bits to make it happen.

if you are gunna rev a 1ltr at 5000rpm for extended periods e.g. on highway it will blow up sooner rather than later.
I swaped to 31's so i could sit on 4300rpm or 85 on the speedo which is really more like 100kmhr
If your 1ltr see's 6500rpm and is still alive i would be suprised.

I did all the highway driving in my 1.0L at 105 kph never had any problems with it in the 19 years I owned it, and still going strong when I sold it.

Firstly you would have to be trying hard just to get one to rev to 6000rpm
offroad or on, and what your saying is its ok to drive with it sitting on 5500rpm. You got rocks in your head, maybe your speedo was out by 20k's hr

An F10A will easily rev to and past 6000rpm, if it doesn't there is something wrong with the motor, i do agree that it is not a good idea, my 1ltr in my old hardtop lasted 5000km of very hard abuse (after a very basic rebuild), pushing a welded rear on 30's with no gearing. On my cheapy $20 taco, it would hit over 7000rpm regularly offroad (the taco may have been way out though)

there is a switch on most tacho's that you can toggle between 4 - 6 - 8
indicating the amount of cylinders of the motor. The signal needs to come from the coil. 1ltrs are screaming at 5500rpm

I know and it was set to 4 cylinders and wired directly to the neg side of the coil from memory. I dont agree that they are "screaming" at 5500rpm, but we dont have to agree.

Just found this with a quick google search, might be suitable for someone that want a 1ltr 5 speed without getting machining done or sourceing other parts. http://cdtianmalois.en.ec21.com/F10A_Ge ... 97298.html

Image

Max input torque 82N.m

Max input speed 6000r/min

Trans-Ratio:

Gear Drive Ratio

The first gear 3.6520

The second gear 1.9478

The third gear 1.4235

The forth gear 1.0000

The fifth gear 0.7954

Reverse gear 3.4660

Structure:

5 forward gears,1 reverse gear

Shift type Manual shift

Weight 27kg

Model of engine 465Q/F10A

The gearshift and starter position look strange???

Just noticed that it has a lower/better 1st gear too 3.65:1 (same ratio as a 1.3 gearbox) compared to 3.14:1

Its not a big 6 or 8 dude, its a little 4 and they do rev.

As I said in the other thread, if you have 31's and no gearing your going to struggle to get to those revs because it will bog down all the time.

Mine had a little too much road gearing, LJ diff gears and 4:1 rockhopper and 31's

Was doing 6200-6500 at 110kmh and could do it all day

I would have been happier if the motor was a fresh one though.

I was under the impression that the suzuki carry van 5 speed (bolted to a 1 litre in the carry van, not the 1.3 model) would bolt to the sierra 1 litre and it has a lower first gear, 4th is 1:1 and 5th is an overdrive.

they're rare, but they are out there.

the jackshaft needs to be shortened but all up an easy and worthwhile job.

and if anyone in brisbane has a 1 litre 5 speed from a carry van I am more then willing to play gunnea pig and try it in my zook.
