2-3a max from an alternator

Post by Santos »

is there a way to make a alternator only supply 2-3a to charge the battery whilst still 100% powering the electrical load of a vehicle?

An alternator will only supply what is drawn from it. When a batt is flat it will draw around 30A (example) from the alt but once it is charged it drops right down to almost nothing.

If the alt is working properly it wont explode a batt.

What type of battery is it -and what voltage is your alternator pumping out?

Sounds like a regulator issue?

Don't f**k around with charging lithium batteries, they have a habit of dangerously exploding if incorrectly charged.

They have the ability to accept more charge the hotter they get (sort of positive feedback), ultimately leading to a serious explosion.

There are specific chargers that measure the temperature of the cells and limit the charging current accordingly, and this is generally done on a cell-by-cell basis (ie. 3.7 volts/cell) by effectively disconnecting the individual cells while charging, as well as on a specific size of cell.

Best source for these chargers to run off 12 volts is the model aircraft arena where these batteries are commonly used and recharged.

Yep, DAMMKIA has summed it up. Lithium batteries are very dangerous- get a proper charger before you hurt yourself!

A small update on why you do not incorrectly charge LiPo batteries. Actually an advertisement for the model aircaft ppl, but still relevant here.
