Toyota Landcruiser 100 ABS on/off issues

my 100 series 1998 GXL manual ABS light randomly comes on which stops the ABS working. It randomly goes on and off and i am sure it must be a loose wire of some sort but has anyone else had the same issue and did they solve it.

Dump the codes. It will tell you.

Or google it - most Toyota models are the same.

how do i dump the codes, i guess i need a mechanic to do this for me?

Suzuki GV's are reknowned for doing the same thing.

I found mine has improved after I cleaned up the sensors and mounts points (to earth them better); plus I cleaned out the electrical connectors (with contact cleaner and then a spray of silicon spray.)

Out of interest GV's will log a fault if you use the handbrake while the vehicle is moving- so perhaps be careful of that as well?

thanks guys, checked the plugs and the front left was full of mud and also broken. wires till connected so i cleaned it out and will see how i go.

if anyone has a spare plug i'd buy it.

i got the codes from going to a toyota dealer. not sure if you can help from here but it so it would be great. It came up with the below 3 wheel sensor codes and toyota reset all codes and said if they come back again to contact them.

C0200 right front wheel speed sensor signal
C0210 right rear wheel speed sensor signal
C0215 left rear wheel speed sensor signal
also
C1249 open circuit in stop light switch circuit

after reseting the codes i drove around for a week and the abs light came on again. i went back to toyota who said the front right abs sensor was not working. i spent $390 to have a new one fitted and it did not fix the problem. i have check all wires and all tested ok, toyota have suggested that it is diffently something to do with the front right wheell and suggested that they take the wheel off and pull apart the whole lot and check that the sensor is not reading wrong due to some mechanical fault such as bearings and other sort of things.

Anyone else got any idea what this could be? my next step is to find a second hand abs ECU and try that.

We had a simular problem on one of our 80 series.
What we found is that one of the brackets holding the wiring for the ABS was bent at the front wheel and would pull on the wiring plug when turning and going over some obstacles.
May pay to remove your front wheels and turn steering full lock side to side and make sure the wiring has plenty of free movement and not pulling tight anywhere. We had removed wiring before a few times but didn't pick up the fault. If front brackets are fine check the backs as well??
Not saying this will fix your problem, but ours came up with the same errors as yours and we also replaced sensors with no luck. Only a apprentice motor mechanic at Toyota could find the problem.
