A low strength product like Metho or turps woud be my recomendation. Maybe even some wax and grease remover (prepsol or similar). Don't use anything stronger like thinners or acetone as this can cut through clear coats and the like. Polishes would even make a tough job of it so I wouldn't bother trying to buff it out.

But like all statements, I'd spot check it on a small patch first. I've painted a lot of cars over the last 20 years (as a job) but I'm not a tradesman spraypainter. So I just don't want to be persecuted at a later date for my opinion, but I'd just like to cover my ass in replying. I still stand by my comments above.

I should also add what colour it is? If it's a Hilux and it's white then it's painted in Commercial paint which is thinner and much harder to remove other contaminates, paints etc from. If it's a metallic or pearl then it will be cleared and you'll have a much better chance of removal

Also DON'T park the car in the sun until it's removed or it will not come off. The sooner you remove it the better chance you have off removing it.

Cheers mick.

I'd take a photo of it too 1st, so if you ever see some punk spraying the same tag somewhere else, you know what to do ;)

That and you should probably report it to the police even though you won't get any compensation or anything, if/when the little turd gets caught there will be more to charge him with.

paint

Post by RRover85 »

brake clean works fairly well, we use it at work when we get stuff on customers cars we shouldnt like oil and grease and air con dye (funky stuff!), there is also Graffiti remover you can get from Mitre 10 that says it wont hurt the original paint...

brake cleaner will eat at the paint underneath, use it as a last resort

(great if you want to strip paint off plastic)

I second the turps recommendation. Will need to wax the bonnet again afterwards as I am sure you will with any of the suggestions coming forward.

Sorry for the hijak, i couldn't resist.

My GQ got tagged once after a 4wd trip (just finger on dirty paintwork). It was one of those stupid names they write, so i wrote "is gay" underneath it. Lasted 3 days before the wanker scrubbed it all off

We use it frequently on paintwork with no problems, maybe the one you used is more harsh or chemically dissimilar.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Ended up using wax and greese remover which took off most of it but still had a very dark shadow of the writting. Finished it off with cutting polish which took the rest off nicley. I think i will keep going and do the rest of the car. The bonet came up well.

Thanks again

Goto Big W.

Goto the cleaner dept.

Take a good look around for a 3 bottle pack that 1 bottle is for carpets 1 bottle for walls and wood floors last bottle is for getting ink/paint off paint walls/cars etc.

Done by some german guy, morksun or something like that for a name.

$10 or so for all 3 bottles.
