Newbie- How do i get a little more boost and power?
I have a 3 inch mandrel bent system out of 4.2td o5 GU wagon. I would like some more grunt for towing and general use. How do i increase boost( Not overboard) and have some power gains without braking the bank. I am sure these engines can get going well. Please help. Any advice would be appreciated. cheers
Best thing you can do is spend the money and get a proper 4x4 tune. particulary a diesel specialist.
Also cheap insurance are Boost and pyro gauges.
should be able to find a bit through search. But again, if you dont know what your doing, things can go "bang" very easily
best of luck. they do go well with a tweak, my non-intercooled 01 model makes 140rwhp on 35" tires. nothing ground breaking i know

Craig,I've got an elderly 4.2 in an 89 GQ and recently turbocharged it. ALso fitted a water to air intercooler. It was making 10psi boost until I turned the fuel up by 3/4 of a turn and it now makes 15psi easily. And the EGT is fine. Not sure if this can be done to the later models but I would certainly recommend an EGT gauge for peace of mind.
Burra Boy. 1x 89 LWB wagon, turbo, frozenboost IC, lots of stuff. 1X 90 leafie ute, AXT turbo, tough as nails and about as comfie...
Have a look at Turbo tech manual boost controler on E-bay $38, this will prevent waste gate creep and enable your turbo to spool up quicker without running high pressure, 12-14PSI is very comfortable with the right fuel setting.
Recomend you install a Pyrometer (EGT gauge) cheap insurance when you start tunning up your diesel, don't go over 550 deg C, and boost pressure gauge.
Also recomend Water to Air intercooler, great for towing sustains your EGT's up those big long hills and gives yuppies the shits when you pass them in there V8 petrol 4x4's uphill. Have a look at Frozen boost website and Burra Boys setup.
All of this can be done for under a grand if your handy with the tools.
Suprised Bogged hasn't told you to seach yet, must be away, so if you have look at the seach function and type in fuel pump ajustment this will get you started.
But be warned, if your not confident about what your doing, or you fuel it up to much without doing something to control your EGTs it will cost you a rebuild or worse as a neibour found out when he put a turbo from a 2.8patrol onto a 4.2 and maxed the pump out, cracked head, melted pistons to cylinder wall and left blue scorch marks in cylinders.

Now, in regards to your car, as said you are probably best to get it dyno tuned first - thats the best way to find where your starting point is and also tweak out some more from your existing setup.
A pyro (EGT) gauge and a boost gauge are also good things to have to help keep an eye on what your engine is doing. Apparently 740C is the limit pre-turbo.
The next thing to do would be to buy a boost controller, then see if your diesel shop can do something with it. You will find you wont get any real gains until you start playing with the fuel delivery.
Forgot to mention the pump in your 2005 GU should have the 11mm plunger and is good for 130RWKW at max delivery and intercooled, recomend upgrading your intercooler though. I am using a 2005 pump in my 88GQ with water to air custom IC. The power curve is just rediculas now and tourque from 2200rpm is flat to 3200rpm.
The stock turbo is nothing special but is safe to go to 12PSI comfortably.
