hilux engine debate: whats best

now now fellas, I call BS on the I've driven them all call. Seat of pants feel is hardly a dyno sheet. Y do u need 8 cylinders anyhow? compensating? lmao
If your wanting to keep it anything smaller then an 8 I wud go straight to a 3RZ-FE. There cheap to buy, fix, maintain and install and have great NA power. Then down the track if u get adventurous u can bolt a simple turbo kit on and leave the V8's KW/nM figures for dead, and thats without even gettin fancy with boost.
some people love there V8's and some people love there turbo's, I like the 3RZ for the fact that I can have brackets made and source wrecked parts which make it a bolt in affair and I can still swing a cat in the engine bay if the need arise . Plus turbo flutter is addictive as hell

forget all the bolt in a 308, put in a 1uz, if the standard lux drivetrain could handle this sort of torque they would be great, but they cant , if you put these in be prepared to change , unis, ratios, cvs, axles blah blah blah and the list goes on if you want the truck to be reliable when you feed the twisting gremlins to it......a 3rz is dear but in my opinion a good choice about at the limit for early lux drivetrains, for budget the commo v6 is a good choice and only a little over the lux drivetrain if you use a pre ecotec one ............you have to consider weight as well the 308 is a heavy pig there goes any chance of good flex in the front without major suspension work to hold the weight whilst maintianing flex ......my 2 bobs worth

The hilux drivetrain has plenty of aftermarket support for its drivetrain and if ones serious about building a powerful lux and has breakage problems due to there driving style they will folk out for the yukon gearsets, longfield axles and HD driveshafts etc etc if required.

im just gunna put it out there that the 3rz option is by far the cheapest, no adapters, no gearbox moving meaning no tail shaft rebuilding. having done my own swap twice now and done another for a mate, easily achivable for $1500

the rules as i no them are NO turbo's (besides desiel) and NO v8's (besdies diesel)Not sure what the new rulings are now but was told the otherday that now there is a limit on what car you can drive by the power output (e.g 200KW) not sure how accurate this info is but makes more sense than just saying you can't drive a V8 or Turbo car.
And NO car what so ever over 200kw (nissan 350z).
Im a p-plater and they were the rules as far as i no.
BUT i hope im wrong.. would love a turbo or v8, ever if it was under 200kw

At a guess guys, how much have your engine conversions cost. I've got a 96 Lux, with a 2.8 Manual. My engine's in the shit - rather than spending big and ending up with a still slow 2.8, would rather go something with a bit more poke for when I run bigger tyres..
So - from those with experience, what have your conversions cost? If you could also mention the price of the engine (and transmission if needed) would be great.

Personally I would never fit a carby engine as a conversion, just seems a backwards step with wat cheap powerful EFI engines there are to work with today, I know they are simple for some but theres not a whole lot more that can go wrong on an efi, if it does it can more or less tell u wats wrong with itself thru diagnosis. Next conversion will be a brace to lash the stage horses to lol .
The new P plater laws in QLD anyhow dis-allow the following
-V8
-turbo petrol
-Rotary engine over 800cc
- piston and rotary engines over 200kw
diesels of all aspirations and cylinder values are excempt.
Your only on you P's for 3yrs or so and from nowing myself its not always a good thing to have a powerful car in the first few years cause u tend to be a bit silly if u no wat I mean.

That's one I put in a mates 4 Runner, it's built for and runs straight gas with a gas carby(you can't engineer 308s on petrol in a 94 4 Runner) It's good for 500Nm with no power figure from the engine builder, he built it for torque and it hasn't been on a dyno yet.a1 mech wrote:R they just a small engine or is it sitting really low on the rails.

The gearbox is on a standard Toyo xmember and the motor sits level so it's no lower at the crank center line than standard.
Mine is a VT 304 and they take up a fair bit more room (bigger heads, rocker covers, inlet, throttle body, etc) but are still a good fit.
Both vehicles have a 2" body lift which helps big time when squeezing the V8s in
Both the 308 and 304 are more assesable and serviceable than the 3VZEs they replaced.
Compared to the 1UZFE the 5.0s are a lot smaller particularly in height and width, even the EFIs.
I agree too that the EFI is the go, starts instantly has better heads and roller cam and better factory Kw, the wiring is a PIA though, but the real benifit was being able to hook it up to a diagnostic machine when it was new and needed sorting.

The 3RZ is by far the best bang for your buck swap you could do if you didn't want to go bigger. i have a 4Y-E efi in my 4runner & a 3RZ in my lux it really is so nice to jump into the lux after banging round in the slug of a runner even though it is the efi version.
When the 4Y-e goes it will be getting swaped out for a 3RZ without a doubt. Even if i had the $$$ for the 1UZ i don't think i would go down that path unless it was a full offroad toy, as apart from Nemisis i don't know of many that have done that conversion without running into some setbacks along the way.
If you do go the 3RZ the best thing to do is get the original stock Toyota Air intake which includes the stock AFM as this seems to be where some fall down that choose to do it a different way.

nothing is impossible but that would be pretty hard i think you would have to have a live front end ,a big body lift and a fiberglass flip front
the only thing would be is the gear lever may get rusted into top gear
all the others would no longer be required with that much power and torque

you can drive a honda s2000 ,lotus elise or a westfeild clubman with a 20v 4age which does 13s
but you cannot drive a HQ premier with 253 and trimatic
so really you just need cash to kill your self now
