a mate is looking at buying some 280/85-16 bias ply silverstones.are they any good for a weekend warrior? looking at them i dont think they'd grip much in the dry but would be o.k. in the mud. that said they are only $210 each brand new!
excellent tyre. Yes worth it for a weekend warrior.

Is this the MT-117 Silverstone. Look a little like a Tractor tyre? From what i have seen they are very strong in the sidewalls more like a Simex or a Swamper. The biggest prob i see with them is they need a tube so you cant air down much or run beadlocks. Sam(strange rover) used to run them a few years ago and they seamed to perform well for their price.
My mate has these and they are awesome for going forwards, a bit worse going back, but have crapola sideways grip, but they do spray a crapload of mud onto ur car, giving even coverage all over..... good for looks on ur drive home

Because this style is a Tube tyre. It will de-laminate if you run them without. Have a look on the sidewall it states that a tube must be used. This is for the Tractor looking tyre. I think there is another one they also call a MT117 that is tubless but its not as aggresive. They may have also changed this and are now tubeless?
Exellent mud tire , Pittiful on road, Dam dangerous in the wet, They do state to use a tube as ruff said, I used them tubless only for short distances , If you cut the centre tread they will perform much better on rock, but will deform on the blocks within a couple of thousand ks,
I ran them as low as 4psi on 1000kg car lost the bead once but you can here the air comeing out when you put it up agianst a log rock ect,
in the mud 20 psi , there not what you would call a floatation type tire,
They have bean promising a 33 x12.50 x15 radial of the same patern but with more side wall tread for about a year now --

link tried them out [the new radial ones] and was pretty impressed [he normally runs the radial claws.
he was going to do a review on www.4wdlinks.com.au but i haven't looked to see if he has done it yet.
he said they were not real good on the way up to cruiser park but they changed considerably with some use and were great on the trip back.
they seemed to work well off road.

I did try out the new radials (285/75/16).. They had a bit of wandering on road with the swaybars on.. no wandering with them off.. they are a bit noisier than the claws, but nothing like Centipedes in that department.. in wet they were good.. Offroad they are a similar tyre to others of the same style, although they do seem to walk a tad better.. By the looks of it they are going to be good value..

The old style ones (which you must have not the MT117Special which is the photo - sidewalls are sexier) are also available in a 10 ply.....
I think 10 ply would be about as tough as you'll find anywhere

Dunno how comfortable they would be on road though.
The Silverstone wesbsite does show the MT117 Specials in 33x12.5x15 as well as the 16" version.
