intercooling td4.2

Post by jaybammm »

hey just wondering how much more power do you get from intercoolin or what are the pro's of putting one on a 4.2td high mount turbo gq. im thinking of doing the mod with the late mod hilux top mount intercooler....with a bonet scoop.... or would a front mout be a better way to go.....

cheers jay.

I think because you have a highmount turbo, your options are either front mounted air-air, or a water-air intercooler. You'll probably find that the heat radiated from the turbo/manifold will outweigh any gains from the topmount.

Intercooling will cool the hot, compressed air from your turbo, making it more dense, which effectively means more O2 getting into your engine. Cooling the intake charge also drastically reduces EGT, which in turn opens the options up to feed more fuel into the motor, which in turn equals more power.

For a good example, check these two threads:

Enjoy.

Pretty much right coxy321,
hot air = less oxygen in it = less fuel able to be burned = less power
cooler air = more oxygen in it = more fuel able to be burned = more power.

With hot air straight out of your turbo you cant put in as much fuel as you would be overfueling, it but when you cool the air there is more 02 in it so you can add more fuel to give it a bigger giving it more power.

If both options are tuned correctly it wont make your engine run cooler with an Intercooler, because once you match the extra 02 with more fuel you will be getting more power out of it.

Oh and definately go the front mount air to air ("in my opinion" :finger: )
Thats my understanding of it anyway. :D
