mq patrol fuel consumption
new to the forum and I see there are a lot of people who own MQ patrols just wondering if any can offer me advice on trying to reduce the fuel the 2.8 likes to drink. other than 31x10.5x15 tyres she is pretty standard, She has had the valve timing advanced so I can at least do a 100 up hills on the F3 and she just had a tune up before xmas. any advice would be muchly appreciated.

two simple things come to mind, though they arnt very technical.
- keep your foot off the accelerator as much as possible
- have you though about doing the conversion to LPG??

I could relax the gas pedal a fraction but where is the fun in that, as for gas conversion most places want to put it in the back behind the rear seat, just what I need a gas bottle inside the car or they want it to run just on gas and replace the fuel tank (not likely no gas in bush) I get about 340 clicks per tank around town (60 litres ??) was just wondering if this was the same for everyone else with the 2.8 or have I just got a hungry pig of a motor.

thanks for the complementm though its a SWB so hardly a bus, check it out im members,
anyways, u should be able to either:
modify the exaust and run an LPG tank along the driveshaft ( to the left of it when looking from the rear of the car )
or do wat V8Patrol did and replace the primary fuel tank with an LPG tank runing across the car as far forward as you can fit and and fitting a custom 40 litre tank up against the back of the car ( behind the rear bar, under your rig )

Are you kidding me ???????..... I get 300 ks + from 80 lits of LPG and I'm running a 350 chev !!!!
My old L28 used to get around the 550 k's per tank too and I aint gentle with the throttle AT ALL !!!

My L28 gets about 550 KM to the tank if i drive it up the highway towards sydney but around town i get about the same as you do. If you are sticking 60 litres in the tank as i do when the gauge points to E for enough you still have a quarter of the 80 litres your tank will hold.
You can buy a lot of petrol for the cost of LPG, 5 speed. Taller gears or any other dubious petrol/money saving ideas.

flying is easy, just throw your self at the ground and miss
i get myself about 18lt per 100k's. but now its tuned up, out of the 160lt petrol tank i should get good km's, anything over 22lt/km, gotta start looking at problems, as i have found timing is a big issue

My little red patrol is an L28, at the moment im messuring the fuel millage. At the moment i have 3/4 of a tank on the guage and ive done about 160km's. I'll let ya know of the final mileage when the tank runs dry.

GOt a new L28 Mk SWB
All on standart tyres. Mine gets some dreadful numbers on LPG. 40 litres every 100kms. that makes nearly 10 gallons every 60 miles. Got to check it.!!!

i would be doin the simple basic items before tearing it to pieces
oh and dont forget they ARE a heavy 4x4 with very bad aerodynamics
they will never run as cheap as grandads hyundai

Sticky valves
The car gave me a surprise. I found out that I could turn the engine by my hands. That's a p40? Valves do not close and there is no compression what so ever. Takes minutes to strat up in the mornings. I am removing the head today to see what happened.
What mpg should I expect with a healthy P40
I opened the valve cover and found out that the valves were really tight. Readjusted them cold to 0.45 (Because it would'nt Start). It ran! However I tought all these tight valves could damage themselves somehow. I also removed the cyclinder head and the valves looked okay but they leaked. So now I am having them rebuild.
