4.6's are the correct ratio for you if you are running 5 speed manual and 35's.

Maybe 4.6 from 3.9s are ok is you have a comp truck or a weekend warrior only.

you can get away with 4.3's on some trucks that originally had 4.1's.
BUT, if you chucked the GPS on before you put 35's on you will find the speedo was out a fair bit also.

Most GU utes will have 4.1's std and most GU 4.2L wagons 3.9's. You can check this on your compliance plate XXXXXX41HG or 39HG something like that anyway.

This could be a different story for drivability however, with many people above using 4.3's on the utes with power ups etc that's personal preference. I've got 4.3's from std 3.9's in a wagon with power ups and find it good to daily drive and good in low range and towing is fine too. But it personal preference...

Do patrol utes/wagons have different gearbox/transfer case ratios dependant on the final drive ratio?

You mention maintaining stock gearing on a wagon with 3.9 and a ute with 4.1 stock and going upto a different ratio 4.3 or 4.6. Or are utes just geared lower overall vai the diff due to the extra loads on the vehicle?

So a GU 4.2TD 5spd ute and wagon both with 35''s with the same diff gears say 4.3 would be turning at the same rpm at 100kmph? But to maintain stock gearing the ute would need to run 4.6 gears?

I have a TD42 GU wagon and I have 4.1s as standard. I don't know where the 3.9 myth comes from. I think the autos have 3.9s but there is no TD42 factory auto in a GU.

turbo 4.2 has 3.9 in wagons

3.9 will mean the drive shaft turns 3.9 times to 1 full revolution of your wheels.

4.1 is 4.1 times per 1 revolution of wheel etc.

I swap tyres regularly between work and every day use and work purposes.

I don't want to run my good 35's permanently therefore i'm putting 4.3's in and turbo soon. I think that will be a good mixture.

I think with 4.625 or 4.88's you need to run 35's permanently.

thanks mate... its just, im runnen 35's at the moment permenantly. its not to bad. the sluggishness of it doesnt bother me that much. however im yet to put a steel bar and winch on plus im half way through building a packrack so im thinking with all that extra weight maybe i should be considering getting a reduction in the diff.
then 37's/38's might open as an option for my next wheels also.
(although im pritty sure there illegal on vic roads)
