as soon as it rolled i cut the engine. now that the car is home my young bro was up here and looking at it and tryed 2 start it y i was not there
i pull out the glow plugs and cranked it over to get any oil out of the combustion chamberand there was a bit more then i though there would be. i then replaced the plug and start the engine and it had a really bad knock in it (bent rod) dam brothers so im going to have to rebuild it the plan was to just sell it 4 parts but now that i have to rebuild as will im think about put a new body on it and keeping it. there is a body i have found a gray gxl body that is A1 in darwin so i would have a few spare body panles.i can get it for $4000. we have a 20ton over head crane at work that i can use on weekends i just got to do some paper work 1st. but as i have never done any think like this i dont know if i biting off more than i can take

has any1 pulled a body off a 80 befor and how hard was it to replace?
any tips would be good?
or i could just sell as much as i can off it and hope i make enff money to pay off the rest of the loan

so you have to put a whole new body on, fully rebuild the engine, check that the chassis and axle housings etc arnt bent, and once you are done you will have a car that im sure will look good, but has been in a serious accident and is written off (on paper)?

It looks like a really big job.

How much does the car owe you to zero your loan, if you dont mind me asking, the gearbox etc will still be ok there worth a bit, its a massive job, to change a cab is a decent job but doable, but everything else seems alot of work, it might be better to cut your losses and start again, does it have any aftermarket parts eg, lift, lockers, winch, turbo kit etc etc, all these parts are still worth a large chunk of what the new price is.

If its just a bent rod or two, it may not be a massive job, depending if it has bent it into the bore, only way to find out is have a look

so if you put a 4000 body on it it will owe you 11,000 plus alot of time, then the cost of engine rebuild even if you do it yourself.

will the car be worth say $13000 when your done? cause thats what it would need to be worth before you even considered it.

Replacing a body is alot of fiddling, the hardest part will probably be lifting the body on and off without damage. but s alot easier with no engine in the bay.

after just stripping a ute in 3 days on my own, its not the end of the world work wise, but you have to do your sums.

what will you get for:
rims and tyres
engine once fixed (if you can fix it for a grand and sell it for alot more)
diffs
gear box
turbo
plus a million other little things.

Im 100% sure you would get your money back this way, but again its alot of work, but only half as much work as fixing what you have got. and in my opinion more financially sound.

work out a spread sheet of every little part that that could sell and at what price. it will add up pretty quick and should cover your needs.

then you can start fresh.

but with the $7000 still oweing on the car plus $4000 for the body and lets say about $2000 for the rebuild it comes 2 $13000 all up and to buy another gxl in that good of a condition will cost me $15000-$17000.
so it will be a lil bit cheaper and i wounld know the back 2 front and the motor will by like new compared buy one with 200,000km on it.

That's IF the motor only cost you $2000 rebuild, could be a lot more, little bits and pieces add up very quickly. It might be better to cut your losses, wreck it for parts and start again. Oh, and your brother should be paying for the engine!! :2gunfire:

valid points, I would still look at the sums carefully and also look at wether or not you want to/need to add in any $ for your time and fuc around.

I mean if it makes sence to rebuild it then go for it.

but make sure you look at it logically.

currently owe $7000
new body $4000
engine rebuild $2000
means you now owe $13,000 plus time and sundries.
and own a $15000 car.
= positive $2000

or you owe $7000
less diffs $2000
less g box $1000
less suspension $1000
less alt $?
less ac $?
less tyres $1000
less engine $5000 rebuilt (minus your 2K)
less turbo set up $1500
less exhaust, seats, dash, a lot of other parts etc etc
you get the picture.
already we are in the positive by $2500 with loads of other stuff to sell.

This total should end up being anywhere near the other total then i would go that way, but its just me.

But please note i have guessed at the value of 80 series parts so do some research and work it out.

I just wrecked out a hilux, and basically scrolled through the for sale notices on this site to get ball parks for what things are worth, you can also use ebay, put them in your watch list then note what they actually sell for in the real world (if you can call ebay that).

good luck
