1997 2.8 turbo. Motor Troubles

Post by JNRS2.8 »

Been having problem with my 1997 2.8 turbo patrol. Low oil pressure loss of power etc. I done a compression test and things seem to be ok by Nissan standards.

I have had the turbo rebuilt; the head reconditioned again after burning out 2 valves after hearing a popping like noise through the snorkel. That fixed that problem. but know after the balancer slipped off I have fitted a new balancer etc now the top end of the motor is really ticky and popping through the snorkel again I have been back to the head reconditioned and he thinks it’s all fine. when oil pressure rises the ticking and popping go but on start up oil pressure is taking about 10 15 seconds to move on gauge and read low while driving but drives and idles fine.
Just wondering on any suggestions about the problems I am having would be very handy.

When was the last time you checked the timing belt / tensioner? How many kms has the engine got on it and when was the belt replaced last?

My old 2.8 engine was missing, popping and farting before it spat it's timing belt tensioner and bang! there goes the whole top end!!
It has 230K on the clock and when I took it apart to find the problem, I was suprised the belt was working at all. It was in a shocking state.
So my suggestion is check the timing system and settings. The head reconditioner may have put the head back in and set the timing correctly, but chances are the belt is streatched and the timing is not as sharp as it needs to be. Faulty valves may have hid the problem in the past and a warm motor is more forgiving (and quieter) than a cold one. ;)
