Best Chev Dizzy/Ignition???

Post by GUEEY »

Hi there.

I have a Chev 350 in my Patrol.
It currently has a HEI Dizzy fitted i am having a few issues with intermittent cutting out while driving.
Before a pour more $$ into it trying to chase the fault, is there a more reliable ignition then what i already have.

Cheers

Grant.

If you are prepared to change the distributor again, I'd go a complete ICE setup. It isn't cheap but will work perfectly first time and outlast most other things. Next cheapest option would be a MSD hei. Don't use Procomp stuff. Nasty.

whats the spec on the engine?

there is no point spending upwards of $1000 (more if you go dizzy, CDI and coil) if the engine doesn't need it.

if just stock to very mild, get a bosch replacement dizzy and good coil.
if you want an adjustable advance curve get an MSD ready to run dissy and coil.

if you need the extra spark of a CDI get an MSD pro billet dissy, a 6A or a 6AL if you want a rev limiter.

I have a mild 4 bolt 350.
I am have problems with the HEI dizzy at the moment, i have changed everything replacable and it still cuts out intermittently.
I am soon removing the LPG and going straight petrol.
I am looking for a reliable hassle free ignition for the bush.
When my truck is not stopped it runs fine with good power!

Thanks

LPG is fussier for spark than petrol so the ultimate system probably isn't warranted. Go MSD HEI. There are two variations to the HEI. One is the common coil on cap style. I have heard of some of these having issues due to heat buildup in the coil. The other has the coil mounted remotely as per most other cars.

I had Pertronix on my TB42 and due to GQ's having high underbonnet temps, that coil was breaking down under load on hotter days. So the coil on cap may also be an issue.

just a replacement bocsh dizzy and a MSD Blaster SS coil.
the ND-18 on this link http://www.nardek.com.au/distributor.pdf
will do the job well. I've using and selling these for about 2 years. In that time i've sold over 300 of them for ford holden and chev V8s not one has failed.
They use genuine bocsh components.

the ND-18 is $299 and the blaster SS is $115

had a factory HEI on a warm chev that was in a 4wd for bout 3yrs and then in a hotrod for another 2.5
Never had any drama's apart from a cracked cap at one stage.

4wd got driven hard n thrashed offroad
hotrod got thrashed even more, and never an issue (driven every day, rain hail or shine......well, avoided the hail anyway.

just check over everything again and try an find the fault, for a mild motor they are a good system

The factory billet ones are made for GM by MSD.

there isn't really much need for a billet dizzy, a good standard msd, crane, accel dizzy is fine, the billtet ones are slightly better however (and add a lil bling) I'd go for a crane hi-6 or msd 6-AL ignition, or for a bit more flexibility and fine tuning, and to run different ignition curves at a touch, then I would opt for the msd 7-AL2 ignition unit.

As for the coil, just an accel will do the job, but I do believe some of the msd blaster coils can be had for much the same price.
