27 spline longs or 30's
ok in the research i have done it seems that the 30 spliners are stronger and as such a better way to go , but the fact that they will cost about $400 more than what i can get the 27's for , is it realy worth paying that much more for the gain? has anybody here got the 27's if so how are they holding up? has anyone hear busted the 27's and now on the 30's and if so how are the 30's compared in your eyes .
i don't wanna be paying $1100 on 27's and have them crap em selves i want reliability , but if the 27's are strong enough to give me that at the $400 better price than they might be the go otherwise i'll just get the 30's
i have only ever broken one cv , my car is a zook with hilux diffs, air locked and 35" claws i drive on anything but mainly like the rocks , and i do 3 comps a year so not heaps of stress on components but enough to weaken things but want the strength to hold up to bigger rubber if i choose to tread that path later .
and yes i have searched , here and else were.

30's are the best way to go if you can afford. Only disadvantage is if you break a 30 spline axle you need a 30 spline axle to replace it and you can't use a 30 spline CV with a stock axle.

I've run 27's for 4 years now and have only broken 2. (short side). The breakages were fair enough: 1 was due to a bent housing and 2nd was the tyre binding in the wheel well. (TT09) I run 37's and 40's (comp spec). They have been covered under warranty in any case. I made this choice so I can throw in a standard inner if I break one. Get 30's and you will need another set for a spare.

Im surprised Bobby warrentied that as the only possible way that could have broken was if the axle was not fitted to the CV correctly. like in the video in the ARB vs Chinese locker thread. The splines twist enough to stay twisted within the side gears of the diff meaning they had to be bashed out of the side gear.

If the axel is correctly assembled in the star of the CV then there should be very little or zero twist at that point. I would have to agree with Ruff. As for the original question:
BUY THE 30 SPLINE SUPER SET. The 30 spline axels are far greater in strength than a stock 27 and you wont need to worry about a $50 stock axel fuqing a $300 star in the CV.
If you break a 30 spline there is nothing wrong with carrying a standard spare CV and axle for both sides whichever side was to break pull the whole 30 spliner out and replace it with the stock 27 spline original to get you out the sh!t. Its easrier to replace the whole CV and axle in one go than piss farting with putting on a CV or taking one of a broken axle for whatever reason so its a no brainer 30s all the way.
And RUFF you would be correct my man that failure is not from twist looks like a clean clean shear from being to far out.

Goes to show tho really how great bobby is with his warrentys.

I lived and learned, I originally bought a set of 27's, after 2 broken axles and all the buggerising around welding a slide hammer on the broken bit of axle to get it out of the cv I went and bought some 30's and never looked back.

no just the 30 spline super set with free gear shift knob yes they organise everything , frieghted right to your door , with a saving of $280 had i bought them here in oz . just go to the "bobby longfeild web site and email terra . easy as , but be cautious if you plan to get hub gears as well as that would put you over the $1000 purchase limit causing you to pay gst and other import taxes and have your parts parked up at customs till you fill out the paper work and pay up. im going to get my hub gears thru locked up 4x4 no frieght charge and the delievery is fast ( not worth getting cheap peices like that thru the states as the frieght will make it dearer than getting it from here but on the bigger items adding up close to the $1000 mark it has always been a pleasant experience with extra cash left in the pocket and thats with paying for frieght as well ,compared to buying here .
