you cn get new suzuki carry utes (99 on i think) from suzuki queensland in 4x4
they are g13bb 16v and 5 speed. have no idea if they have low range
the 3cy jap ones that joe mentioned are 550cc and 660cc (mos are non turbo)
early oners are all 4 speed with low range tranfer
later ones could be either 4 speed with low range tranfer
or 5 speed + EL (extra low) they have eectronic diff locks and the el wih a rati of 6.26 only could be engage whilst in 4wd mode. i have been trying o find out if this gearbox had a seprate slave type 1 to 1 tranfer or if the front and rea drive shafts go directly to the gearbox.
if it was a slave setup think gwagensteve wold wet his pants. imagine having a `six speed gear box` and a tranfer box
i have been keeping eye out for over a year for an old one... yahoo motorsports where flogging these for $1500 under the 15 year rule, only last week a newcastle dealer had an 88 model with very low ks for $6990 but for that price you might as well go for a new one.
also i may get blasted for saying this but daihatsu came to aus during the 80`s in a 4x4 3cyl 1l... so poer wise it may be a little better (bets you it the same motor block as the 1.3l charades)
