Ok with the addition of a lockrite in front of my 92 wide track swb, I have heavy steering.

1. I have a vitara power steer box and an EA falcon pump lined up for $200 from local wreckers. Is this a fair price?
2 I assume vitara boxes, line up with the bolt holes on a sierra?

3. I have a 3' dropped pitman arm on the sierra box. will the splines and tapers be the same or do i have to get a vitara dropped arm?

4.What is the go with the rag joint. Vitaras have a uni?

I don't know alot about this topic since i've never done it but a jiminy bolts straight in, a vit needs a wedge and lokkas are awsome.

The vitara box is far from bolting up. The bolt pattern is back to front. It will involve a wedge/adapter or fabrication.

Here's one mounted, in an engineer-approved manner.


To legally build the steering shaft, I do them like this- from firewall to box: ( I don't have a photo - just imagine)

If you use a wedge, I think you can use a stock steering shaft.

If you don't use a wedge, the angle of the box to the shaft will be too much for the stock rag joint.

As I don't use a wedge, this I do it - from firewall to box.

Use a collapsable 1.3 WT shaft. These were fitted to sierras after 1991.

Drill out the plastic shaft plugs and compress the shaft. THe shaft is installed in the normal way.

I remove the rag joint and bolt it up solid.

Cut the old input shaft off your old steering box, fit it into the old end of the steering shaft, grind a notch in it and bolt on a uni from the firewall end of a 1.3 WT or NT steering shaft- that then bolts up to the vitara box.

The end result is a shaft that's neater than it sounds, has all factory welds and hardware, and works with the angle of the vitara box.

I think i'll go ea falcon pump and 81 celica box and the plate with countersunk bolts idea.
