ok im going to jump in here and ask. i just junked my 95 delica cuz to much money to fix it. when i was under it i noticed it had the Aisin 3040 trany as my surf/4runner had in it. i did see some differents in the two like the bellhousing bolted on diferent but the t-case mount flange looked the same. so im on the quest to find out, ill keep you up to date on this cus i just got a 95 lwb pajero and already looking at puting in a yota front axle and it seems that the yota t-case has better after market gears for them.

In Gen2 2 Pajero were 2 types of auto gearboxes:
- years 90->94 - Mitsu type: V4AW2 - Aisin AW372L(A44DL);
- years 94->00 - Mitsu type: V4AW3 - Aisin AW30-40LE(A340F), can be find also in Pajero Sport/Chellenger.
A340F was also in:
- Jeep Cherokee XJ(87->01) as AW4;
- Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ(91->99) as AW4;
- Toyota 4Runner/Hilux Surf(96-04) and Pickup(90-94)
- other Toyota's on North America market: Tacoma, Tundra, T100, Sequoia.
But this is not the same transmission in every case.

I see you mention 1UZ'ing your Pajero. Have you had the tape measure out? It'll take a bit of squeezing.
I have gone solid toyo axle and am not using the mitsi transfer case, I went as far as not even using the gearbox as well.
If you are going 1UZ, your best bet would be to get a V6 4Runner or surf gearbox and transfer case. Then they all bolt up together. Unfortunately you cannot get gears for the chain driven transfer case that bolts up to the back of these box's as opposed to the earlier gear driven (stronger) box.

so what gear box are u using
I am using an early surf manual box (W56) and gear driven transfer case.
Electronics are the hardest part of the 3040LE's. Some operate with stand alone ECU's and some integrated with engine ECU. Either way it is possible to get them to shift proprly again.

I am changing the whole tranny as I want the manual + the gear driven transfer case.
My reckoning is it would be easier to adapt the Pajero V6 to the surf manual than it would be to adapt the Pajero 5 speed to the surf transfer case.
I may be wrong and until I split the Pajero box and have it all apart I won't know.
Do you want to stay auto? That would be easiest from an engineering point of view as everything bolts together but harder from a wiring point of view. From looking at your photos (now they work) I don't think the engineering or wiring will be an issue for you.
I have not had the transfer case off the back of a 30-40 Pajero Auto so don't know how they differ from the toyota Surf one.
It wouldn't surprise me if the output shafts are different, hence my comment about using the complete surf gearbox, which has the centered rear output (as opposed to Prado with offset front and rear but same transmission).
With swappng bell housings and input shafts from the Paj to the surf box, everything then SHOULD bolt up
Of course the other option is to just swap the diff head over or see if in fact the toy transfer case bolts up to the Paj auto.

Here is very good article about swapping Jeep's t-case to Mitsu - NP231.
I have idea to swap DANA 300 instead Mitsu T-case. Dana 300 looks like very good option for SAS because is very strong and you can use Toyota's front solid axle without retubing.
ok got the Pajero today and looked under and took pics of the tranny. it is the same as the hilucs/4runner/surf with some differents do to being a Mitsu. now i weighing the pro and cons on just doing the yota axle flip or doing the tranny and axle swap. i think the hardest part is the wireing on the tranny after the swap if i cant get just the t-cace to work, the exhaust would have to be moved. to me the axle flip is the fastest and EZer. what do u think

My Japanese buddy to day said it should work. would have to change the tq-convertor, the input shaft, tranny pump and the first set of clutches behind the pump, out of the Pajero tranny into the yota one. Take the tranny ecu from the yota doner and run it on the Pajero. i hope he can get me some free trannys for these he is looking for some.

Bad part is the exhuast will have to be move. finding the wiring diagram for the tranny ecu. Im sure there is more goods and bads for this swap.
Need to get the part number for the center console from the USA Montaro for the t-case shifter its on the other side.

Because you are not changing motor's I think it'd be easiest to just cut the pumpkin on the diff. No wiring issues and its been done before.
Your mate is right about swapping the input shaft over, in general havn't worried about anu clutch packs unless you were doing a major power up, such as transplanting a luxus, you'd just swap all the guts of the transmissions over.

J Top, I knew the early surf gearbox's were not the strongest (w series) but are better than the G series. There is no doubt the R type box is better.
I was going to W series as to get the gear driven Tcase. What adapter do you know of that adaptes the R series to this T case? This would be my preferred option as I have a R series box sitting here.

if i can get the parts cheap enough i might be tring this in my pajero with the T-case im having rebuilding for me. if this works it would allow me to run a yota axle up front
first off ill need to get my hands on one of these tranny to t-case adapters off a Jeep Cherokee
get or try to make one of these but its almost $600
and this will allow me to run this type of t-case dana 18 and this is the same type being rebuilding

In the Cherokee the tranny code is aw4. to fit a dana 300 you need these parts

just remember that the passenger side and driver side differ from the USA make sure you don't confuse it. and you need to know what out put shaft spline count you have.

Thanks claycity, the auto trans in my Toyota Surf (A343F) is exactly the same as the one pictured from the Cherokee (AW4), so this would allow a simple bolt on swap (if output spline length is ok) to a gear driven transfer that is stronger and has reduction gears available.
