driving on defect notice
I took my car in to get my body lift approved today and they slapped me with a defect notice for my brakes not being up to scratch, non standard drag link and modified stay bar.
I can't be with out my car though. Does anyone know the fine for driving with a defect notice?

Its a 84 4runner.
I did not know that the bits they got me on were not road legal, well not completly blind to the fact but thought they would not look.
As far as I knew hilux rear brakes did not nwork unless you had a load in the back. But DOT says they are not good enough. I am going to take out the Z bar for the next inspection and get the stay bar covered up for the inspection as well.
They did not pick up on the relocated rear shocks though.

100% positive you need approval for it. It was the only thing suzi sport told me I had to do out of all thoe mods I got done.
I know a few people with out approval and have gotten away with it for while. But if they ever do get get pulled over they will get a defect notice and a fine. I would rather get approved and have the bit of paper to shove up cops ass if they ever pull me over.

Why do you say that? Are you with the DOT??
Or you think they are pricks and give me a new defect notice when I go back.
Whenever they look it's basically a free-for-all. If they happen to notice something, they'll ping you for it.

This is not legal advice.
When I had my defect notice lifted, I asked the officer a similar question. His response was something along the lines of "Oh, I dunno, you might get an extra $100 fine or something." But basically the idea was that if you had fixed the defective items, then you may get away with it. It would only be a big issue if you had ignored the defects and continued to drive the vehicle in the same condition.

whats a stay bar?
with the Z link contact who ever you got it from and they should be able to send you a letter stating that it meets DOT requirements, that is of coarse if it does. the reason you got the defects is the fact that it is illegal to give a certificate of modifaction on an unroadworthy vechicle.

I may have the part wrong. I thought the stay bar was the bar that joins the diff to the chassis.
I got the z bar from suzi sport at albion. They are going to get something sorted for it. But for now I am going to put the original drag link back on.

Man I am pretty sure in Brisbane you don't have to get lifts or lowers engineer approved, otherwise I would have had to get all my previous cars engineered. If you are going to get it engineered you can call one to come out to your house to get it done. There are plenty to phone. You do not need to go into DOT. If the engineer comes out he simply blue plates your car and gives you paperwork to file with DOT. Now you have caused yourself more hassle than you ever needed. Bugger.

cancellation of registration and a quite hefty fine for driving an unregistered vehicle. i had the same problem hit with a defect notice that also required a rwc. i was given 7 days to fix it. Which I didn't. At the end of 28 days when i still hadn't done anything about it my rego was suspended. 6 months on I am now doing something about it. My advice get it dealt with asap and don't drive the car

No, it means you have to book it in and take it to QDOT yourself. Before you commence the process you have to apply for a provisional okay, outlining what you propose to do.
However you will definitely get a "no" to this application unless you are doing no more than 50mm of lift. Opinions differ on whether you can use metal or urethane but to be on the safe side you should go with aluminium or steel spacers.

Ahh I was wrong. I retract my former statement regarding calling an engineer out to your house to blue plate it. I just spoke to QDOT mods and they said get yourself a modification application form, fill out exactly what you intend to do and make it out of. They will then send you back a yay or nay and then you go ahead and do it. Afterwards book it in to get it engineered at an approved QDOT mods place.
The reason I thought you could call them out to your house is because this is all I have to do for all the mods on the race car. Sorry guys.
