hi everyone, i purchased a sereis 2 disco with the 4ltr V8, it seems to have a substantial oil leak, cant really see where is comming from
its either leaking from behind the harmonic balancer or somewhere higher and dripping down behind the harmonic balancer
im wondering if this is a common leak? does anyone have any info about it?
it has 127,000 kms on the clock and the heads were re-done 10,000 kms ago if it helps
thanks in advance, paul

99 disco 2 V8 oil leak

You should have enough room to remove the harmonic balancer. without removing the radiator. I did one on a v8 Disco 1 I'm sure the series 2 Disco would be the same.saintdiego wrote:thanks for the reply, im getting it looked at on saturday, i agree with your reply, i just hope it is an easy fix! do you have to remove the radiator and air con condensor for the repair?
thanks, paul
The only thing is the harmonic balancer puller. has to have longer bolts, as the balancer is deeply dished. I took the bolts that fitted the tread to a bolt supply and got longer ones. Then it was pretty easy to get it off. Cracking the Crank shaft nut can be a cow. I did it by disconnecting the coil wire and used the engine to crank and crack the nut.( careful if you use this method)
Fit your socket and breaker bar so the handle end of the bar is solid against the ground and give the starter a very brief burst. This will crack the nut for you easily .
DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK
thanks for the help mate,
it was that seal, the only drama we had was removing the fan....we couldnt seperate it from the water pump, ended up having to remove the water pump and fan as a complete unit and seperate it outside of the car,
and trying to find a water pump gasket after 12:30pm on a saturday avo was impossible as all the specialist places were closed so we made one from gasket paper
but its all sorted now! thanks for your help
