Running air conditioning pump from 2.8-3.0L as tyre air pump

Post by brad 93hilux »

I have changed to a 3.0L diesel but have the 2.8 airconditioning pump bolted up, now as i rarely use the aircon i was thinking of using this pump to pump up my tyres instead...

Has anyone used a a/c pump off a 2.8 to fill up the tyres?

I know it is common to use a older style a/c pump that has a separate sump, but since this pump is already bolted on with the belts in place, i was thinking it might be a easy way to run it?

Any one done this, and what did you use to make it work eg- how would you lubricate the pump, airline fittings etc...

Cheers
Brad

read the bible noob :finger:

ha ha I only say it cause i read it for a few hours in gen tech and the discuss various ways of lubrication the pumps without a sump. some add grease nipples and pump them full some add oil dripper things and filters to re collect it to keep the air clean.

they are nice and quick, works best with a tank.

Do you have some pics of how you set up with the greese nipples and air lines?

Or do you have link for a site with this info on?

nice i found the stuff you were talking about, only checked the toyota section not general  ....

But any chance of a couple of pics?

I am still a bit unsurte of a few things, now i was not planning to run a air tank so i understand i need a air lubricator pre- compressor, a filter/ oil seperator post compressor...

Now is there any reason why i cannot run a hose from the oil seperator/ filter and have a quick release fitting to connect to the hose for pumping up the tyres?

I was planning to leave it wired in the way it is and use the factory a/c switch and pressure switch?

Will this work ok

I'm not planning on using this setup for the airlokkers but only for the tyres.

Cheers

no sorry it was mentioned in that tech somewhere or on a link from that tech, but it sounded pretty straight forward, tap it in near the bolt to the sump from memory, but best to find it in that bible as i really cant remember perfectly.

sounds like it would work ok, so output to filter which recircs oil back to intake. output with quick release connector, and your ac button is the on off switch.

only issues i see are - what pressure does the ac system cut out at?

where does it measure said pressure? and have you cut this out of the system.

i can see this being a bit fiddly to use...

or hang on do you mean put a t piece into the complete ac circuit from which you put the filter and quick release conector?

this should work, you would need to look into how much getting pirtek or an ac place would charge to add in that t piece but then it should be ok i would think. sounds pretty good imo.

when there is no gas in an ac system the compressor doesnt cut in, or does it??? if so im guessing this can be over ridden.

this is how my a/c pump looks

Image

Now not sure what to do about the fact the lines are on a type of flange and not screw on type hoses.

I did not think about where the pressure is taken at, would be inside the a/c box thats behind the dash i think as it does not have any sensors in the engine bay, the 2004 model hilux that i stripped this motor out of had a pressure sensor in the high pressure a/c line, but this is part of the reason why i am not using it as a/c

so if i by pass all my factory a/c stuff what else is need to make it work?
this is what i think- let me know if i am close

I will run from a air filter to a air lubricator to inlet of the ac pump, then on outlet of pump run hose to air filter/ oil seperator, pressure switch then to a quick release fitting to connect to for air hose to pump up tyres, and a 12Volt toggle switch running to a aftermarket pressure switch?

Where is the best place to get the pressure switch or is there a specific type

Cheers

not sure if an oil pressure switch would do the job , possibly? or an airlocker compressor cutout switch , they cut out at 110 and back in at 90 iirc psi that is.. im going to do a similar thing with my hilux , tank under the tray , airline fittings front and rear etc and a big truck airhorn for special effects hidden under the tray , im interested in this lubrication system you speak of can you elaborate on this or provide some links

What torque? Tighten it till it strips and then back it off half a turn.

yeh it is just the standard air lubricators and filter/ oil seperator that is used with air tools...

I read in the bible that you can get the stuff from this site http://www.airide.com.au/index.php/cPath/1_5_25

I was more asking the questions aimed at what people have done to this compressor with the setup...

Have a look at the different type of presure switches, any idea of which type or pressure rating it is best to set it at?

fair call , i would figure that if your ownly pumping up tires you would never need more than 50 psi right. unless trying to pop a rolled off one back onto the bead mobile you may require a tad more usualy not but. myself id use the standard one you can buy as a spare from arb for the lockers just make sure your setup can handle 90-115ish you should be able to power a rattle gun off that :P but how long dependant on the size of your tank i guess. thanks for the link ok

locker pressure controls should be 70-100. you would probably need to run a mini tank to put your pressure sensor onto, have a look at the mini silver square tank i have in the set in the for sale section, you will see the pressure sensor in the center of that.

http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/ftopic175082.php

free plug  but check it out it might give you some ideas.

you may be able to buy one that fits in line, not sure.

woulg be so much easier if you could utilise your whole ac set up with a t piece, i would go see an ac person as then the wiring is complete, the pressure switch is in there at a pressure suitable for the system. nah scrap that idea  where would the air get in

so yeah you need to work around your plan and sort out the pressure switch.

Yeh i was thinking with the pressure switch i could just have a T piece in the outlet of a/c pump to allow me to screw it into.

In the bible i kept hearing people say to run a check valve after the pump, but i think it is in reguards to a air tank and back pressure, do you think i would still need one since i will only be using this for tyres?

Note, i'm not using this for lokkers but only for tyres

dont see why a check valve will make any difference as an ac pump will be higher pressure than a tyre and your not running a tank, when you remove the tyre inflator from the tyre the tyres valve will in effect give you your check valve.

anyone know what pressure an ac system runs too?

the 100psi cut offs are available from arb pretty cheap. so might as well chuck it in.

pressure switch 100psi $27, I would just do that, then you know its a good pressure to work at.

Still un decided on weather 70-100psi pressure switch is the better one, i was thinking more 110-150psi would be better suited....

But then i'm only guessing as i would not have a clue what pressure the standard a/c system uses...

i dont think it will make much difference, its just a safety switch to stop your pump blowing itself or pipes to bits. like a 100psi air tank doesnt immediately make your tyres 100psi becuase the pipe can opnly flow a certain amount of air.

sure slightly higher may be fractionally faster to fill but i mean fractionally.

if you had a tank it would be a different scenario, as the xtra pressur would mean more air in the bank so to speak, but you will be free flowing from pump straight to tyre so no such need imo.

Yeh fair enough....

Great idea but, the arb pressure switch is alot cheaper.....

Now to work out how to get these airlines made up so it can bolt to the top of the compressor....

I got the setup on my lux the the 3RZ motor. Piece of piss. Had done to my old 3Y motor as well.

Just cut the low pressure rubber line to give you enough length to put in a joiner barb fitting to suit that rubber hose. Connect some new air line hose to the other side of the barb fitting. Now you can connect in the oiler and filter. (I just run a filter and drip some oil down every now and then).
DON"T FORGET TO USE HOSE CLAMPS!!!

One the high pressure side do the same but go the the T-piece you were talking about and fit a quick release fitting to one outlet and a pressure switch to the other. (70 -100 will do for pumping up tyres). You can go 110 - 150 but is a waste if you don't have a tank, plus more chance of blowing a line.

I run a 15L tank and run rattle guns off it no worries.

For a filter I run a large phnumatic silincer.

Yeh thanks for that, that is exactly what i was after....

Sounds pretty easy and cheap to setup... which suits me good at the moment...

Cheers Guys, thanks for the help

PLease dont just cut your ac system, go to an ac place and have the gas removed, they might not charge anything as they get the gas and it saves the environment from some nasty shiz.

then cut to your hearts content.
