40/45 transfer selector plate mods
I remember seeing a thread on here a while ago about modifying the transfer selector plate(the one that stops you from using low-hi 2wd) on a fj40/45. I think twisty may have done this but i cant find it anywhere!
Does anyone have an idea of where i could find it??

Its simple.. Take the dust boot off.. Move the lever into 4 low.. Then try to push it forward into what would be 2 low.. Youll see the piece of metal thats in the way.. I just cut a slot in mine with a 1mm disc and fold it up out of the way, so I can restore it later if need be.. My soft top has the shift gate missing completely.. Seems to work fine that way too.. I prefer to leave the plate in place as its attached to the end of the lever pivot stud, leaving it there retains all factory clearances on that stud..
Have done this too a few case's, DON't just take the plate of and leave it at that. Puts too much strain on the large long bolt back into the case. Cut said plate to allow the shifter to move forward. I'll look for my pics now....

I've sheared 2!pcman wrote:too much strain wtf the bolt is like 12mm in diameter its only a gear shifter its not like its holding any weight
And some times it "Pop's" into N when it's bumped up a ledge....
As for the rear strain, Its great too "Burn" the rear around tight turns!

Heres a quote from my buildup thread from when I did it.
After reading about it on the IH8MUD forum, I did the 2wd low mod today. Really easy to do, and should be pretty useful!
Heres a pic of the xfer leaver and the bracket that you modify. The lever is in 2wd high in that pic. If you remove the metal to the right of it, you can then acess 2wd low.
Looking up at the bracket from below. To get it off just undo the nut you can see in the middle of the pic
and this bolt..it was a bit of a prick to get to, but got it easily enough in the end.
The bracket out of the truck.
with the section removed.
Installed back on the truck with the lever in 2wd low. (i only had silver paint)
Shift pattern is now.

Useful for backing trailers too.Tojo wrote:why would you want 2 low? when will you use 2 low?
Have been told its good if you stuck nose down into something....rather then trying to reverse out in 4wd loading up the CVs a lot (risking breaking them), you can first try to get out in 2wd low.
