my 4.2TD stumbles when its cold and then blows a huge puff of smoke ( only one time, once its done that it will be fine) i have only noticed this cince the cold weather has arrived (doesnt help that i leave home at 5am)
anyone know if this is a early warning sign of anything more serious?
i have about 280000kms on the engine wich is regularly serviced with penrite and the filters are changed every service (other than the fuel filter, i do that every 2nd service)

troubles with my 4.2td
gudday.
its unburnt fuel/cold combustion chamber as the boys said so there are 2 things ideally to check... 1. glow plugs, and 2. On import safari's and some patrols there is an heating element on a relay inserted into the inlet manifold, this switches when starting to heat inlet air. Give it the once over and see if alls sweet.
good luck

they also blow alot of smoke like that as they run out of fuel, if youve ever started one with a fuel line clamped you will know
mine does it every now and then, especially on the cold mornings, but hasnt done it since i fitted my holley fuel pump, i think its probably the lift pump in the fuel pump being a bit tired and struggling to lift the fuel right at the beginning.
either that or it is cold combustion chamber.
