i dont usually post up on here.. i just lurk around for the tech
but just saw this thread and thought id chime in for once

i know the guy who built that truck and to be fair, it does do well even with it being a heavy brute

i for one, do like my lightweight zooks though.

the square flares make me want to vomit

Funny they don,t mind them over there , Rhino Ray use them on his rebody jobs.

come on though, give us poms some credit not all of us use agricultural lookin flares... but the market for zooks is tiny compared to the luxuries you guys get! its all Landrover over here so we gotta make do... (or steal from other trucks like i did )

I like the rims, and these tyres are awesome! Wonder if we can get them here??

and they do work very well and for the price i paid (£54 each) you just cant go wrong! the proper boggers im looking at buying for my LJ80 are over £200 each!!!

The flares are useful and although the accessory bandits on here (people who couldn't make a fart happen let alone a Do it youself build)
don't like them, its there prob.
Rays Rover zook i like, he used to always be doing somthing different ,
that reversed steering zook he built was different .Would have been funny to watch people drive it

Scissor shakles on the front of the other one pictured is a bit on the dangerous side over here , our cars are driven at 100ks plus for long distances .

What is the extra bits around the front shakles and towards the Bump stops on yours ,A sort of pinned Goofy setup ?

unfortunately the currency isn't as strong as it was 12 months ago i have got a few things from the states myself, but the bigger more expensive stuff soon totts up after all the import tax and all that b*****s

besides... i thought you guys were pretty much up there with the US when it comes to gear for your trucks! some of the oz stuff ive seen its just especially some of the things ive seen from tuff truck!


my number plate always gets comments haha! the story behind that, was i was fresh outta uni, my dad bought himself an old ex works replica mini cooper s, and it had that reg on it.... he really didnt want it.. (dont quite know why) so he said im having it on mine since its cheaper than putting it on a certificate.. i didnt mind.. nice private plate? sure! haha....


oh and the front suspension on mine is (as far as im aware) a one off over here made my the man behind macsport4x4.com. Paul offered to put my YJs on for me and add a little twist, so the "lo-down link" was created. Its probably been tried before, and im sure were not the first ones to do something like this, but we couldnt find anything like it really, so didnt know if it would work... but worth a try at least..

like goofy leaves, but at the front and solid bars, extra dampers, integrated bump stops, and the idea for lots of articulation

when we first started it, a guy on the UK forum cross posted on pirate, and they tried to rip it to shreds... (see for yourself - http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=523512 ) but we gave as good as we got its fun to wind up the yanks haha...

finished it, put another thread up on pirate with vids of it working, and there was only 2 or 3 replies on that thread! haha... ah well... 2 years or so later and it still works well. apart from suspension and gearing, its pretty standard, and so real lightweight! and was my daily drive up until 3 months ago when i got a motorbike


i used to have scissor shackles on mine when i first started out... but really didnt like them... but still, itd be boring if everyone had the same setup

good to see some one thinking out side the box. does it steer well or does it want to wonder over the road? looks to flex really well, i like the set up

Thought it was somthing like that , atleast it offers a more stable distance beteen the spring eyes , true goofy on the front would be a night mare .
You can Lock these in the Up position near where the original shakle mount was ?
It would be only the weight of half the diff and wheel working there but that works more stable then being in the air

dont worry... that was taken about 2 months before i got the private KOK plate


regards on road handling, driving it you really cant tell its any different... in fact, it actually corners nicer than when it was +3" spring under - its got a panhard rod which no doubt made the difference ive driven it all sorts of places, country lanes, motorways, and obviously, off road

ive taken the engine out this week to replace with a 1.6 vitara/tracker lump and had all the suspension bits off to re-paint and check for wear and its all like it was when it went on... i was pleasantly surprised
