No auto locker for a GQ rear?????
Hey Guys,
I've been doing the ring around. Trying to get an auto locker for the rear of my GQ.
Called BBM, 4wdsystems, detroit. No one makes them. Some did but don't anymore.
Anyone know where you can get one?

or you could just deal with it and leave the lsd in place.Mick. wrote:Unless you weld it you don't have a choice unless you do a diff swap.brad-chevlux wrote:bogged wrote:save your coin and get an air locker.
i love that answer. not.
'wants' 'needs' and 'can afford it' the killer of all fun.
Or buy a Chinese airlocker.![]()
Cheers Mick.
going by the manual, the the 2.8 LSD centre needs almost 3 times the torque to make it slip, compared to the one fitted to the 4.2 patrols.
it's just really annoying when every time a locker topic is posted the same 4 people chirp in with, "just save up and buy a locker"

Rear lsd is different style to cruiser etc - assuming makes an auto not an option. Also patrol lsd is pretty good - might be why.
I have a front centre lying around if you want to do the option above

The original question was if anyone knew of where to buy an auto locker for a GQ rear. Obviously i'd buy an air locker if i could afford it, dun need you to tell me that.bogged wrote:when there is 2 choices LSD or air, what is the problem?? So getting your LSD rebuilt is not an option?

the main reason you should be thinking about putting in a auto locker over an air locker, isnt price or whether or not that a company makes them, or just because you lsd is flogged......
you think about whether or not you want to be selecting when it is on, i personally like auto lockers, i dont want to have to worry about stoping and turning my locker on, i dont want to worry about another thing to rip out of under neath my car, or something else failing(the compressor its self)
if you want the selectability of the air locker, and the open diffs when not locked, then the only choice is to save up and buy one, if your lsd is flogged out and you have no drive, and you need a re build, or is just lose, look at getting a second hand center to tie you over till you can afford a air locker.
i want front and rear detroits, i cannot afford them at the moment, so i will wheel till i can then do them, or i may do them one at a time, i wont be spending the grand i could buy one detroit for, on two lock rites(or the 5 - 6 hundred units) because i want the best auto locker and thats the detroit.
also as a side note there is also the electric lockers

Go Hard Or GO Home
EVERYONE that asks about an auto locker can't afford an airlocker, hence the reason for asking.bogged wrote:when there is 2 choices LSD or air, what is the problem?? simply saying get an air locker isn't a helpful answer.
listing off the other options on the other hand is likely to be more helpful.
Weld it.
Rebuild it with an extra shim
Get an RD2.8 LSD center (already needs more torque to slip it) and add a shim to that.
Deal with not having locked rear diff
Auto locker in the front
all cheap, all have pro and cons, all more helpfull to this person then being told just get an airlocker
i don't know if you've noticed, but some times being a jerk is needed, funny or entertaining,
Some times it just makes you look like a jerk.
Guess which one your posts in this thread is.

cheers mate. I agree. I'm also very well aware of what my options are. I know I can weld, get the lsd redo etc but the option i was a fan of was an auto locker in the rear. Thanks for everyones suggestions but i'm just trying to find out if anyone knows if you can still buy 'em or not.
...I'm looking for a solution that involves flogging a dead horse...or cat...
Yeah I called them. Don't make 'em any more.turps wrote:Detroit at least used to make a locker for the rear. I remember discussions about them yrs ago. Only real issue I seen was they where about the same price as a airlocker. So around $1200.

it's a bit of a myth that auto lockers are cheaper than air lockers. the initial purchase cost of the hardware is more expensive yes. auto lockers cost you in accelerated tyre and mechanical wear, and there are numerous offroad situations where they can cost you a LOT more - most specifically anywhere you need to turn tightly and in off camber, low traction situations.
although the drive in/drive out victim price of an air locker, installed with air compressor is around $1800 (++? I'm guessing a bit, I haven't priced it in a while), there are things you can do to make it a LOT cheaper. R&R the diff yourself and take it to have the locker installed, or install it yourself if you have access to the necessary tools. you do not need to use the ARB compressor, a $30 supercheap auto compressor will work just as well, you will need a handful of air fittings (probably also available from supercheap) and a pressure switch (hobbs or the ARB one or whatever, $40ish).
so you go in to ARB and haggle a bit and whine to the guy about club discount and how hard it is to get into hardcore 4 wheeling etc etc until he feels sorry for you and just wants to get rid of you so get your air locker in the box for $1100 cash (once again a while since I bought one, adjust your numbers to suit). get a few quotes to get it installed, and if you search around outerlimits you might even find someone who is fairly local and can install for you at a very reasonable price (lets say for want of a better guess start around $200). you've spent $150 on a pressure switch, some wire, switches, relay and a cheapie compressor at supercheap.
you do your own wiring and compressor installation on wednesday afternoon after work, get some new fuses on thursday to replace the ones you blew, friday afternoon it's working fine, and saturday you're heading to jenolan feeling invincible.
so for $1450 you're driving with a selectable locker. and you have a limited slip hemisphere to sell or stick in the front when you have time. If you wait you'll either save the cash for a new airlocker in no time $50/week will only take 6 months! - or you'll find a second hand one.
if you could find a detroit, you're going to pay around $1000 for it, even second hand. yeah you don't need a hole in the diff case or a compressor, but it's hardly an economically driven choice over an airlocker.
if there is a lockright, it will clank and bang and make it steer funny especially in the wet and chew up tyres and fight you in corners offroad all the time, then it will break and you'll have to take it out again.

Free air locker to the first 20 callers!
Its almost just as cheap to buy a rear locker than it is to get an RD28T centre.brad-chevlux wrote:going by the manual, the the 2.8 LSD centre needs almost 3 times the torque to make it slip, compared to the one fitted to the 4.2 patrols.
