Goodyear Wrangler ATR - any good?
Hey all
I'm on the verge of getting a set of new rubber for the Grand Cherokee. I'll be doing mostly black-top work but want a good all-terrain tyre that's going to last for a while. I have an OME HD kit fitted. The Grand is, of course, monocoque, so MTR's are very noisy I've been told - not that that is a huge problem mind you.
The choices are:
1) Goodyear Wrangler ATR 245/75x16
2) Goodyear Wrangler MTR 245/75x16
3) Cooper ST 245/75x16
Again - I'd like an agressive-ish pattern, but they have to last a long time. I've had plenty of BFG Muddies in the past and had 45-55,000 k's on them before they were relegated to spares duty.
What would you guys buy?

If you want a really good ALL TERRAIN and something that will last than the COOPER is a great tyre!
I had these on a 95 Hilux and had 90k on them when i sold the car!
They have a stronger sidwall than the BFG and would be comparable in strength!!
You will get a longer life out of the COOPERS!!
I guess I'm a little concerned about the Coopers. They claim to have a very long life, as POS has pointed out. I'ts my impression that in order to have long life (beyond many other brands) they have to be made of a much harder compound. A harder compound leads to a less pliable lug, and one which would break or rip on a decent rock face rather than simply stretch and snap back.
Am I wrong here? Long life = hard compound, hard compound = fragility.

An MTR would be an overkill for that sort of work IMHO. Even possibly the Cooper ST?
Have you thought about the Cooper A/T? I've got them on my Feroza and am extremely happy. For an A/T they are better than my previous Bridgestone H/T on road- smoother ride, quieter, unbelievable grip around corners. Off road on gravel it it hardly slides around now. Mine are 235/70R15 and have a 50000km pro rata warranty, subject to alignment, rotation and balances every 10000km. The price for the 10000km work is fixed at purchase time - in my case $40 (which seems good value for a wheel alignment, balance and rotation).
Going by the description of what you want they would be a good choice.
BTW the rubber on them certainly isn't hard, in fact it's very soft and pliable. The A/T also has sipes in the tread blocks to help with wet road performance.

Keep an eye on load rating. To keep the car legal you are supposed to meet the load rating on your tyre placard, and I noticed the MT/R and AT/R have lower load ratings than other brands in the same sizes (I looked at 235/75 15 and 31x10.5 15.)
In case it helps, I have the Cooper brochure. S/Ts in 245/75 16 have a 111 load rating in a "metric" listing, or a 120 load rating in the Light Truck list.

I've also heard people say one of the Goodyear AT tyres is very slippery in the wet on road. Can't remember which AT model it was though?

AZA a tree root can be, and often is more devastating than rocks!
I have seen more tyres destroyed on sharp tree roots than rocks!
In fact i saw a brand new 35" BFG Muddy get torn on the sidewall all the way around. All that was left on the outside of the rim was the bead!!!!!!
So tree roots will destroy anything!
I am not saying that the Cooper is better OFF-ROAD than the MTR. In his question he states that he will do the majority of Black-top driving. Here the Cooper will outlast the MTR by a country mile.
Also for the little amount of off-road work that it sounds like it will be doing i don't think it would hurt the lugs to much!
i guess its a personal opinion thing, i dont feel safe with the coopers ever since me and cory slide off the road in his car , so i guess that has alot to do with why i dont like the tyre

I think Cory's driving had more to do with this than the tyre!
so do i, but round every corner it dont feel like it gets much traction, but i am probable paranoid and the tyres are pretty worn, they are awesome brand new however

btw im still sicking by the mtr, if i was to get a road tyre it would be either an all terrain or an mtr (mtr for looks poser style), im not saying cooper are a bad tyre im just saying they aint my personal favourite

I Have the Toyo Open country A/T's on mine for daily use, I was recommended by a friend who has had them on for a good while. Apparently they have the same tread depth as BFG A/T's and a strong sidewall. I find them great on the road and off (excluding heavy mud). The tread pattern is similar to Wrangler MTR's but not as aggressive. V. quiet too.

If you want the Kms I would go for an A/T. Coopers are loud, but i think you will be happy with either the G'year or B'stone (they have a new A/T that is more roaddish out now called the 694) as they will goive you good ks, grip and will be decent for what your truck would do offroad.
As for what a tyre "feels" like... that tells you nothing. I spent a number of years in the tyre industry and they can coat the rubber for transport and it may appear softer/harder or whatever, but it gives you no real indication of how the tyre will perform. Even the tread patterns can be deceptive in how they would handle on the road. Best method of checking how a tyre will go is track down someone with a similar truck as yours and then talk their experience... because there are so many factors when making comparisons such as this.
