3" Body lift
3" Body lift
Has anyone had this lift done to their rig or have they installed themselves. Not interested in the 2" really.
Very interested in what those peoples opinion are.

Just wanna be able to clear 33's without breaking the bank.

you could do it with a 3inch sus lift pretty easily... no body lift, will be under a grand, no engineers required, no casters...
with a body lift, there are other things you need to hack like bullbar etc to clear headlights, rear bumper needs hacking and lifting, shifters need bending/cutting welding... brake lines etc etc..
Your call.

Yeah. I have 32s on with no lift at all. There's a guy near my place that does 3" lifted suspension for $750 fitted on a GQ using Dobinson springs. Admittedly that's more than body lift is going to cost you but it's still pretty reasonable, and it's a much better way of doing it - that much suspension lift should also improve your articulation.
Too much body lift is noticeable and looks weird.
Still, as Bogged said, it's your call.

This is not legal advice.
Shark wrote:The only reason i dont really wanna go for the suspension lift is mainly the cost, i dont have 1500 spare and thats what arb wanted to do a 3" lift!!! They said i needed new shocks and springs and gearbox packers and uni joints????????
Thats why

Yours is a shorty??
TJM do a kit for shit loads under $1000... But I realise that $1000 is still hard to come by... :(
What is this kit?? What i want is enough room to fit 33's comfortably, be able to find someone to fit the lift kit and it not be a real hassel. $1000 is hard to come by when you have other priorities but if you guys think i would be far far better saving my money and getting the springs then i will BUT if its anything over $1000 then i will prolly just get the body lift and spend a few days adjusting stuff to suit.
I will never be going any bigger than 33's.

If all you need is enough room to fit 33's. Then the body lift is the cheap opion. Guessing if it is a shorty it aint std susp anyway. My GQ SWB had a 2" susp lift for ages and ran 285/75R16 (33") for 4yrs before I fitted my BL. The tyres did rub on the body Inside of gaurd and the front mud flaps. But that was all.
So the body lift would work, only prob is for your $100 - 300 there is no other benifit other than room to fit 33's and a slightly higher ride hieght.

If you are looking for someone to fit a spring lift (only fiddly bit really is pressing in the castor bushes if required) then I dare say that going 3" body lift is going to start to cost you as well.
At 3" of body work you'll be modifying all of your barwork, probably need to modify / extend the shifters, etc. Once you fit body lift you really need to get engineers to keep it legal and the cost of the engineers, the labour to fit and the body lift kit itself is likely to cost far more than the TJM kit that others have pointed out.

I'm not very good looking, so I guess I better be useful . . .

Have you actually priced what it will cost you for a body lift to be installed? The way you talk about the cost of the ARB/TJM ssuspension setup it sounds like you were going to get them to install it. I may be wrong though...
If you were going to install the body lift yourself, I will bet you any money that the suspension lift is ten times easier to install, and something that you could easily do with simple tools. You will prolly be looking at about 600-800 bucks to have a body lift installed by a shop, to a professional standard with all the details taken care of.

Built, not bought.
So i am left with a few things to think of Its a hard choice wether you want a offroad beast or a weekend car and when i thought about it the other night all this car is a daily driver and once to twice a month i will take it on a soft-core track and some basic beach work and thats pretty much it!! I dont need heaps of articulation all i need is enough height to fit some 33's. Im pretty confident that i can fit a body lift in myself as long as i am organised. PLUS if i can do the body lift myself i will save alot of moola.

So wonder what he ended up doing.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
I've got a 89 SWB TB42 AUTO with 2" spring & 1" body. Total price roughly $1000.
I had the suspension lift put in but have since seen how simple it is and would do it myself next time to save money. 2" lift didnt require any castor correction plates and consisted of 4 springs, 4 shocks, transmission x-member spacers (now taken out). Anyone with a basic spanner set and a trolley jack can do this. Depending on what springs and shocks you buy the price of this could vary alot. I used King springs & ironman shocks.
The body lift of 1" I put in my self in about 6 hours in my driveway without having seen it done before. Very easy 8 bolts & spacers to be replaced, no requirement for extended brake hoses and I bent the dif breather tubes in the engine bay about an inch to suit. The 4wd shifter in the cab didn't need modification to shift into low-4. Get some high tensile bolts & lock nuts from your local fastener store and have some suitable diameter bar cut and drilled into 8 1" discs at a local machine shop.
My car accomodates 33" tires without any problem.

remember what insurance company numbnuts "AGREE TO" and whats roadworthy are usually 2 different things.
When push comes to shove, they will say its unroadworthy, and your phukt, no matter what is in the policy. Read the fine print
"Car must be roadworthy, or we accept your yearly donation for no reason".
