alternator load

Post by ferog »

I want to put 4 more spotties on a roof bar on the feroza, and a uhf system, I currently have two spotties on the bullbar.

Will this 'overload' my alternator? Or are all alternators capable?

Thanks! :D

Emma, from memory the Feroza alternator is only capable of outputing 55 amps. So if you work out all your current consumption roughly you'll get an idea on what you can run.

Don't forget your EFI, heater fan, stereo, headlights etc all need to be factored in too.

To calculate the current draw for your spotlights use the following:

power (in Watts)= volts x current (Amps)

current (Amps)= power (watts) / volts ; so a 100W spotlight would be 100/ 12 = 8.33 Amps.

and Emma, you wont need 4 lights on the roof..... Two good size ones would be adequate.

I had 2x 100watt Hella's on the roof, and the idle rev's dropped significantly, but the light produced was pretty good.....

Thanks,
David n Heath,
Is there somewhere the total average AMP consumption of a 95 feroza, It'd take me a while to find everything like the efi and radio ect ect? where can I find that info ?Lights are easy but the rest :? I know! im not very technically minded sometimes, but I can not find it in the ws manual,
Sorry guys I am learning !

Heath, is that with 2 on the front as well?

It's a bit hard to calculate for the reasons you've mentioned Emma. If you were going to be running say four 100Watt spotties (~ an extra 32 Amps drawn) then I'd be guesssing that an alternator upgrade should be looked at. I believe you can get them rewound for a higher current output, but I'm not sure how much that would cost?

If your alternator voltage gets dragged down too much (which will happen if too much current is being drawn) then your battery won't charge properly.

Do you know lights on the roof are illegal to use on road? I think there's some rule about the wiring not being connected whilst the vehicle is on road too??

No... upgraded the headlight bulbs though, 100watt high beam (cant remember low beam).

And yes roof lights are technically illegal, cause no headlight is allowed to be 1300mm above ground, measured to teh centre of the light.

The best way, if you want roof lights, is to have them mounted either on a removeable roof rack, or so they can be turned down when not needed.

Have a go Emma (nearly called you Em, but dont know you, so not sure whether you like being called Em), there easy to do. If you are goiung to, get teh alternator rewound by an auto elecy to meet the draw..... $100 - 150....

Cheers

Thanks Heath, u can call me em, (Emma is what my oldies calls me when im in trouble or something :D )

I was going to use roof racks, and for lights I like the narva ultima's rectangular 100watt, they are slightly rounded top and bottom so two or three would look really good on a rozi, I brought some for dad on his bday they are great lights. I will have to get my uhf before I do this, so I'll probably attempt it in a couple of months, can't wait luv playing with my rozi  ;) .
