Brought 1983 cressida for $100 for power steer. question ??

Post by zookprojectfnq »

After buying this car in running order beside the power steer pump there is a belt driven pump thing that has a separate air cleaner. it delivers air through a vac operated valve to each cyl beside each plug.
the motor is a 5ME. Car is MX62

Is this some sort of supercharger and can I adapt it to a g13

It's basically air injection to lean the car out. They are often referred to as a "smog pump"

It won't add power.

You could try setting it up as an air compressor. I've heard some people have been able to make them work as an air compressor for tyres.

Done a bit more research and yer your right its for some sort of egt set up. Keen on seeing how much pressure its good for but it has no clutch so it will always be running.

Did a search on power steer conversions. ages ago joeblow did up a drawing in solid works for mk62 powersteer box to sierra conversions, thats where I got the Idea.

I currently run a 3inch dropped pitman arm on my sierra box to correct bump steer. After I put the toyota box on, what pitman arm do I use to give the same effect?

I run the Cressida ps box on mine and I found the Vit pitman splines are the same. I bought a vit drop pitman from Low Range. Goes great.

is it the engine that is sealed up (air tight) if it is its the vac pump for the crank case to suck out emissions and make the crank case have a vacuum.

people with blown or turbo cars use them for the brake vac.

nah its definitely an egt emission air pump. The pipes go into the exhaust valves to mix with the exhaust to make it pass emission tests.

Thanks for the confirmation trimixer. Im just spewin I just brought a calmini 3" dropped sierra pittman for nothing.

I believe the toyota liteace vans have a nice drop pitman arm that fits the box and mates up with the suzuki arms . Only talked to a guy with it not seen it myself

It's an air injection pump. Nothing to do with vac'ing the sump and no good for forced induction.
It would use more power to turn it than it would provide benefit. It's purpose is to pump air into the exhaust manifold while the exhaust gas is still hot to help burn partially burnt fuel and reduces exhaust temp which in turn reduces nitrous oxides emissions..
