4.2 Conversion

Post by beast of a GQ »

Im just thinking about doing a conversion from my 2004 model 3L GU patrol wagon to a TD4.2T. What sort of price am i up for and who can do this on the northside of Brisbane.
I tried the whole search thing but as usual it never works for me.
What year model 4.2 is the best one to be chasing. And can this conversion be done for under 10 grand.

Cheers, Shane

Under $10,000? Should be doable.

Im doing this conversion at the moment, pulled the 3.0lddti out today, like said above. It all depends on how much you get ur td42t for and also how much work you going to do your self.

I brought my GU with the engine supposedly seized. Well i got the engine running however it needs a rebuild and i am in NO way interested in driving around in a 3.0 when the trusty 4.2 has proven it's self for so many years. I had a spare td4.2 runner which i was holding onto as a spare in case i blew my comp truck up, However i decided to totally strip it down and rebuild it with performance in mind. Im doing all the work myself except the machining and fuel pump modifications. im hoping to get out of this little project for approx $27k but that includes buying the GU which i got for 8100. once finished aiming for 200RWKW.

A mates 3l gu just blew recently. He sourced a 4.2 from perth + mounts and also had to mate a gearbox.

Got it back the other day and after paying for motor, gearbox , labour and engineer cert as well, cost him almost $20 000.

Why did he have to make a gearbox? the Gearbox is the same in the ZD3.0DDTI except it has a spacer which you have to remove? And why did he need engineering certificates? The 4.2 came out in this model as a optional engine therefore you only need to fill out a engine number change piece of paper. in WA anyway.

You'd be looking for a Series II or series III GU.

AFAIK:
The series ones are a little old and some are not turbo obviously and some don't have the internals for turbos, like oil squirters under the bore or something...
Series IV onward had intercoolers and as such had slightly smaller turbos, EGR systems (which are a hassle and need blocking off) and will be probablly a bit more expensive.
Series II & III's have the internals for turbo set ups, bigger/better favtory turbo set ups and no pissy little IC and EGR.

Just my 2c but worth a think about.
GU 4.2 TD Garrett BB Hi-flow, M8274 + Bells & Whistles with plenty of fruit still on the list!

Not sure why the gearbox? but here in the ACT anything that does not come stock on your vehical you need a engineer cert, ( legaly)

My bad, i just re-read the forms and you do need to take over the pits for any motor conversion which dosnt come as a factory option or if there is a change in the number of cylinders.

Not really, you need to completely remove the zd3.0 engine mounts and also either fabricate or get some td42 engine mounts(chassis side) and weld these into place. The other HUGE problem is the re-wiring. I have not got this far yet but this is a problem which i cant get out of my mind, not sure if you can have the senors deleted from the ecu or you need to (trick feed) the sensor wires so the ecu 'thinks' everything is OK.
Also the diff ratio's are different to the td42. the zd3.0 run 4.3 and the td42 has 4.1.
The accelerator pedal need to be changed to a wire cable, as the zd is fly by wire(electronic)
You need to remove the gearbox spacer.
Im sure theres going to be plenty more but im not far enough into the project to tell you more.

And the money goes to bogged, for the 10 grand it'll cost you (give or take) you should be able to get into some sort of GU 4.2, even if it had a few more kays i wouldn't worry too much - added bonus is that when you go to sell it, it'll be less suspect and get more money.

My motor blew yestersay.(Cracked piston). So now this conversion is defiantly a go ahead. Im in the middle of rebuilding my td4.2 so all up rebuild cost is around the 2 grand mark plus turbo and i got the motor for $500. The price tag is adding up quickly.

That would be a great mix of machinery there. But the amount of sh*t that would get put on me for the whole nissan vs toyota thing would be way to painfull to bare.
The chev would be great but those stupid P plates won't allow me. Im defiantly sticking with the td4.2 as i already have one and have a wiring harness there aswell from my GQ.

Thanks bogged most appreciated for keeping my options open.

only heard rumours about the 1hdfte into gu so that thread is great thanks bogged - like you say who cares when your out with your mates!

As Beast's car is a manual (exeddy tuff clutch - assuming sorry) would the conversion be cheaper again, if you could use patrol gearbox so custom shafts, gearbox crossmember, fuel tank mods, handbrake mods etc weren't needed cut costs again?

Does anyone know if it is possible for 1hdfte to go to ex-zd30 patrol gearbox in a manual?
I'm not quitting drinking, I'm retiring at the top of my game - sporting comeback likely.

Was thinking the same thing SCANAS....that would be a much simpler install for sure and you wouldn't need to deal with he 200mm box to diff offset.

I have had a few corrosion issues with the GQ roof and have been looking sideways at a GU but over here in NZ they are ALL 4 cylinder ZD 30's after 02.

The TD42T is a great engine but ageing, when stuck in this situation you gotta face reality the ultimate set-up would be a Nissan/Cruiser combo as they make 160RWKW standing on their heads!....viable alternative if funds were available to do it properly

great link bogged!
