The Worse Has Happened!!!

Post by SimplyPV »

well fellas.... my roza is down and out....

i will tell you everything!...... trip was going GREAT! she was pullin a 1500 lb trailer full of stuff jus fine and i had to climb some pretty steep moutains. in order to get over the moutains and still maintain speed... i was able to shift into 3rd and and hold a steady 60-65 on 6% uphill grade.. that is roughly a 40 degree angle climb... some were as low as 2 miles and the longest one i climbed was 8 miles... worked a treat. all on the first day. on the second morning, while checking everything before hitting the road again (i had driven around 300 miles or so with NO problems) i had noticed a small oil leak on the main seal between the engine and the tranny.... was nothing major as long as i kept an eye on my oil level and topped off every time i filled up.... proceeded on the second day and drive for 11 and 1/2 hours non stop. making really good time... managed to travel around 700 miles or so.... thats when i ran into a problem... roza seemed to have a bit of a problem while climbing a small hill in the desert... i heard this loud pop right when i shifted from 4th to 3rd..... i crested the hill and shifted from 3rd to 4th so i could try to listen to the engine and right after i shifted.... heard another pop and the engine started sputtering so i quicky shut it off and cruised to the bottom of the hill and pulled over... got out to take a look and i saw oil steeping everywhere.. and lots of it! took a look at the exhaust and saw that the pipe leaving the muffler had blown off competely!!! went back to look in the engine bay and i knew the worse had happened, a rod was thrown and had punched a hole through the block. :bad-words: i was able to fire her up again but she sounded horibble and was skipping a cyl. and spewing oil everywhere. called for a tow and i was about 100 miles in the middle of the desert between 2 small towns. took a tow 3 hrs to get to me (froze my butt off in the cold since the sun was setting when roza decided to spew oil) had to back track 100 miles to a town and get a hotel room.... took a good look the next morning and found a small piece of metal which looks like cast alum. to me and was polished on the inside..... i assumed this was part of the block.... couldnt find any hole still... so i went ahead and traded the trailer back in for a rental truck and a car dolly. finished my trip last nite. i made it, i'm here, safe and alive. currently at my aunts house, will be going to my new house later tonite so i will be able to post pics of what i found and the mess thats been made hopefully late tonite or tomorrow. but i'm expecting the worse... engine is garbage.... not sure how i'm gonna find a replacement engine... and no i dont want to swap in a bigger engine... btw that reminds me.. that first pop it seems... was an engine mount and tranny mount both that had given way... i assume this is what threw the engine of balance and with the strain it was under.... it jus couldnt take it and a rod was thrown... atleast this my theory... so... :sighs: roza is out of action right now... and hurting badly. my poor baby... at the moment i'm heartbroken. i WILL get her runnin again.... but how long is the question. due to $$ and the fact that i blew everything i had and more in order to make this move and start college. will keep you guys updated on what i find as i look around on my current situation and my options.

Engine crappin out

Post by Toyhatsu »

G'Day SimplyPV,

Sorry to hear about the engine mess. Like David says, I hope that is is not as bad as it seems right now. If I was any closer to my engine swap I would sell cheap/ give you my engine, two transmissions and transfer cases. I Usuall give my old stuff away or sell it dirt cheap.

You have experienced my worst nightmare of being out in the middle of nowhere and having major drive train problems. This is why I haven't been to Moab. Too paranoid of something breaking. This is also why I am going with all Toyota stuff at least I can find parts most anywhere. My junk is my one and only daily driver.

Keep us informed.

A few weeks ago on my last trip down south I to broken an engine mount and gear box mount towing a fully loaded trailer driving through some hill'y boggy tracks . The gear box had jumped off it's mounting point about 2" to the left ( passengers side ) We were soooo lucky nothing else had broken . I didn't even realise anything had happened until I when to shift it out of 4wd , The gear leaver had pretty much disappeared . We jimmied the gear box back into position , used wire coat hangers to hold it in place , nursed it to our next camp site then went into town and called a mate to send some parts to us ,

That picture reminds me of Leon's feroza when he busted the exhaust in the bush. We got it going with a block of wood and fencing wire we skunked off the side of the road. :finger:

Engine swap

Post by Toyhatsu »

G'Day SimplyPV,

Well the guy on Pirate BBS hasn't contacted me so I assume that he sold the dual transfer cases to someone local...bastard. That's where I got my Toyota engine was off that board. So that sets me back. I can't work on the engine till it warms up around here as it is over at a friend's garage with no heat. I couldn't figure out an easy way to get the thing out of the back of the truck and into my apartment. It needs a timing chain as it is not an noninterference engine. The 3RZ has two timing chains and you have to not only replace these but some of the gears, all rollers, tensioners and adjusters. The kit is $450.00 and I was prepared for that. I am thinking that as long as I have the head off (yes you have to remove the head to replace the timing chains) I might as well have the head looked after and maybe put hotter cams in. I still have to rebuild the Toyota tranny and check the transfer case out (would like at least to have 4.7 gears if not duals), buy a custom cross member, as long as it is apart put in a CenterForce clutch and pressure plate. need a small four core radiator, etc.etc.etc.

I wish that I could tell you otherwise but it is going to take some time to gather all of the parts together, get them in good order and then have enough money to have the "pros" install it.

I'll keep you updated but it doesn't look like anytime real soon.

WOW this is not our month pv

Everyone cross your fingers you may be next...
Yeah today i experienced something very similar to pv, in my old 190,000 rock... i knew she would soon need some attention, but i had no idea she would really truly die on me. Here it is 3:00am wednesday morning, and i'm looking for rebuild kits, or whatever it takes to rebuild these old Rockys. What all does it take to do a proper rebuild? Where can i get it? Any ideas are appreciated. If you have spare pistons, please! PV i've found a place that claims to have low milage jap import motors for our rockys. $600 + shipping from Cali. I'll figure out where i put that info and send it to you tomorrow, if you're interested. Good luck with yours...
I love Sarah :)

G'Day Aaron,

Got your PM and you are #2 on the list. I am so sorry to hear that your engine went out also. Like I said above it is going to take me a while to get the engine swap done. It is way too cold (-13*F tonight) to do anything, my Rocky engine has never run better so I am not really in any hurry to get it done. Sorry I can't help right away.
