warn high mount, free spool not working

can any one help me with this...
whats happening is, i pull the freespool lever all the way out and i can only pull the cable out about 100mm then it stops...
what can i do to fix it

Sounds like the brake is activating ?

Free spool on a standard 8274 is one of those things they added as a "feature" for marketing purposes, I don't think they ever intended anyone to actually use it.

Remove the brake assembly, strip it, clean it, check that all of the parts are in good working order then reassemble.

My freespool was a bit dodgy, but a strip and clean fixed that up.

Make sure the cable hasn't pulled into itself (and got jammed) on the drum before you go pulling sh*t apart...........

Yes, and they are a COMPLETE pita to get it all back together by yourself!!

If you DO plan on doing this, when you separate the baking drum - do it over a towel on a bench so you catch all of the ball bearings.

Now by reading that, i take that it would be a smart idea to remove the whole winch from the car and do it on the bench?

Yep. Might as well strip most of it down and check it over. Some fresh lube and grease wont hurt it either.

now where the armature shaft goes into the end cap, there seems to be a fair bit of play which seems to be causing the problem
do you just buy a new end cap or is there another way?

They only take about 200-300mls of oil.

Pretty sure there's supposed to be a porous bush in there, similar to what you'd find in a starter motor. Shouldn't be too hard to source one, just make sure you impregnate the bush with oil before reinstalling it.

oh realy because on mine its worn rite down to the brassand theres like 1 to 2 mm play

Yep, thats flogged out for sure. The brass sleeve/bush is supposed to be a whisker oversize on the armature shaft (whisker=bugger all).

Has the armature fouled on the housing at all? I had my armature cleaned/checked and proofed before i reinstalled it.

Also ensure the bar is square.

Seen new bars with twist in them. Drum only spins on nylon bushes std.

yeah it looks like it has fouled
so with that brass cap, does a new one get welded on or do i source another end cap

I've never had to replace one, but i would assume that given yours is flogged out, just collapse it in to remove it, then carefully tap the new one back in. Getting a second hand endcap could lead you back to your current position. Make sure you get your armatures end diameter checked, just incase it is worn as well.

Maybe call in to your local auto electrician with the end cap and armature?

yer i plan to take it to a mate who rewinds and rebuilds electric moters tomorrow and see what he thinks because im a little sus on the part of the armature that the brushed run on aswell

Provided the contact area for the brushes isn't cooked (blue/purple colour), or isn't badly worn away, you should be able to put it in a lathe or press drill and carefully use some emery cloth to clean it up.

I have a half hacksaw blade with a hook shape ground into it to scape out the small gaps between the armature contacts - no doubt your mate will have something similar. He might even have a replacement bush handy for the end cap!

hey guys
i pulled out the winch on the weekend
pulled apart the brake and cleaned it all up
and it seems to have fixed that problam

but i still have to sort out the moter problem
i think ill have to get a new one and upgrade to a 4.5 at the same time

ok cool
i noticed on the brake pads they were completely smeared with either grease or oil from the shaft
i degreased everything and put it all back together and it is all fine
