3L - ct20 holding 11 pound all the way to 3700rpm

Post by Outer Limits Hilux »

G'Day all

Just wondering if i should be getting worried or not.

I only just got it onto the road but never used to be able to drive it much. only little drive around the block and sh*t.
Now hat i have done a bit of drivin it holds 11psi all the way to about 3700 rpm before it starts to drop off. Before it used to get to about 3200 before it drops off.

And now it even comes on sooner, 1600 as apposed to 1750. Now this is really good because the power is unreal, i almost kept up with my mate in his new tdi hilux.

But does this mean she's about to go bang bang or she just cleaned the carbon build up out of the head and shit

P.S the turbo has been hi-flowed, min boost settig is 11psi (if this helps)

surely the purpose of high flowing it is so that it can achieve better air flow i.e more boost for longer.

the only reason to worry imo is if your egts are getting to high. has the fuel been played with?

best bet if your worried is to get a pyro on the thing so you can monitor for heat stresses which could occur if being pushed too hard.

other than that
*there's a rock, drive over it :) there's a bigger rock, drive over it  there's an even bigger rock, oops broke it  Upgrade broken bit :bad-words:

with a diseasal, you need to put more fuel in to drive that turbo...with more air supplied, you should have low egt's....although you high flowed it, does that mean you have a 3 inch exhaust or is it still a std one??

My Boss has been fiddling with his 3L hilux. He has a full 3inch exhaust from dump to exit (ends at the transfer) and his runs 13psi and it loves it. tows his camper trailer with ease. the other day his egts went up to about 610 which is a little high. but it usually sits around the 560 mark.

Dont really know if your turbo coming in earlier and staying on til later means anything.

Hi-flowing could mean 100 things, ranging from bigger front and rear wheels or one of, different fin design/angles, wheels with more fins, different bearings, etc etc.

If it has been hiflowed correctly which by the sounds it should be, it sounds fine, you dont spend 1000-1500 for it to behave in the same way as a stock unit.

Stock units are not designed for optimal performance, their an allround unit, being reasonable at , fuel consumption, egts, spool, top end etc etc, hiflowing will lose efficiency in some atributes, but will gain in others to suit your needs.

Boost is set by the gate, not the turbo its self, a spring change will lower it back down to standard, the turbo is just more efficient now and possibly youve put a less restrictive exhaust on which allows it to run higher boosts at the same settings, the same goes for really cold "dense" air, it will run more efficiently as there is more oxygen in the air.

turbo

See this is the thing,

It is completely stock for the first 2-3 meters. (luck to be 2 inch) then it still only goes to 2.5 inch, doesn't sound like a mack or nothin

Ya reckon a 3 inch would make a bit of diff ?

You need at least a 2.5" dump pipe off the back of the turbo for a start preferably a 3", then either 2.5" system or go up to 3".
Your pumping in so much more air the exhaust gases have to come out somewhere.

what does ur boost gage say after 3700rpm?
does the boost die off or does the boost stay the same but seem like its not doing anything?
like as if the air is just getting heated and being ineffective?

turbo

Post by Outer Limits Hilux »

Yeah it started to die off around 3700, but was only really doing anything up to around 3200. so the rest is just heated up crap really.... needs a front mount. lol

So 3'' all the way you reckon or is that too much. and how much should i be paying for it ya reckon? (with just one turbo muffla in the system)

im about to do the same ct20 set up in my luxy and considered the front mount, but definately worried about lag with all the 90deg bends etc.
and top mount being around the engine doesnt seem like it would have a great effect. 3inch zorst all the way :P.
Good luck mate.
