Navara D40 Problem, Low range wont disengage

Post by AZZA FJ40 »

G'day

This is just a notice to let everyone know that i had a problem with my D40 ST-X manual today.

Today I had an issue with low range unable to disengage by the selector switch located on the dash.
The 4LO indicator light on the dash flashed and after a while the 4WD light came on and stayed on constantly.
I tried all of the usual things like disconnecting the battery to reset the computer and checked all fuses, i also checked for damaged cables underneath around the transfer, with no success.

As a last resort i called Nissan Care.

I was located in Oberon for the weekend, so they sent out the local NRMA mechanic.
As i found out, this is a common problem with Navaras, and rodeos.

The best way to disengage it is apparently to put it into 4H and stop/start forward/reverse clutch out fast/slow and throw in a few turns. Usually this works. However not for me today.
I had to drive it back into Oberon town centre in low range, just in case anyone ever askes in 4LO 6th gear a navara does 60km/h at 3000rpm.

It was put on the hoist to do the same forward/reverse, fast/slow and then there was a crunch and it was free. Thank god for that.

I am not sure as to whether myself leaving it in 4LO overnight contributed to this but i dont think i will ever leave it in overnight just in case it was.

Hope this helps the next person out.

Manual front hubs or automatic?

Transmission windup sometimes does that.

usualy shifting the 4x4 position switch wile in netural unlocks it "usualy" they can be quite stubborn sometimes the switch is a bad idea i like a stubby lever. just my 2 cents
Beep. Beep. Beep.. Whats that sound? Oh Look Its Just Another ZD30 On A Tow Truck.. =)

What torque? Tighten it till it strips and then back it off half a turn.

to be honest that was the first thing i tried, switching the switch is usually the first thing you do to try to get it to change. lol.

the lever now certainly does seem like the most reliable option
