Power and Cross-Over Steer Conversion on the luxie
Hey Guys,
You read right, thanks to Lachlan, Craig and Luke at Off Road Industries (previously chaos4x4), I now finally have power steering AND crossover steer. And boy is it ever SWEET!!
The guys have done a top notch job, it is so responsive and easy to turn
now its unbeleivable.
I havn't been wheeling yet (maybe this weekend we'll go for a test run)
but I'm sure the 4-Runner pitman arm I've got is going to hit the leaf on
full lock compression on the drivers side.
I've been told this can be remeded with the installation of an 80 Series
pitman arm in place of the 4-Runner one? Do the splines fit etc?
Can I just bolt it up? OR should I get the 4-Runner arm bent up to suit.

You can drop the front hangers and tilt the box back a bit and I was told to fit a 60s pitarm but you`ve got to get the end to suit.havn`t done mine yet but will soon

I have already dropped the front hangers 2" or so,
and there is no way I can rotate the box, let alone move it,
this thing is so heavily braced on both sides of the chassis with
a fat bits of crush tube right through, that box ain't goin' nowhere!!
Just the way we like it!
Mick, it isn't close at rest, only full compression, but it is bareable
I guess, not really that major.
Would it be cheaper to mod my pitman, or buy an 80S or 60S
pitman??

I told you Bart that if you couldnt wait 2 weeks till you get the taller springs and longer shackles i could put an 80 series pitman arm on it.
The pitman arm on it now is a 4Runner one and has an integral ball joint so the only way of reverse tapering it or even just to put a ball joint taper hole in it is to weld it up which would be useless as it would make the car illegal. The only way i know of ever reverse tapering a hole is to re taper it the other way to a larger ball joint size so you couldnt use the same balljoint.

An 80 series arm will fit on an IFS hilux box. I am one on mine.

In other words the pitman runs closer to the chassis and
away from the springs. I have standard-ish height springs
so there is not alot of room between the chassis and the drivers
leaf spring on full compression drivers side.

What Toyo Truck said they are alot flatter then a standard IFS arm.

Took the truck down to ORI today for a checkup,
Got a new rear shaft put in and all greased up
picked up some bargain special slightly-used adjustable ranchos
AND the lads ironed out the pitman rubbing issue.
Just drove it home and with the new drive-shaft and ranchos on 1
and the trucks never been better!
I used to cop a beating on Parramatta Rd but now its smooth as!
The steering is straight and it stays that way when you hit all those damn
little potholes and stuff!
AND on the M4 I did 130kph without the slightest vibes
I can't wait to take this thing off-road now!!!
Just gotta try and stay away from the mud with my new hubs!

picked up some bargain special slightly-used adjustable ranchos
AND the lads ironed out the pitman rubbing issue.

double (ie. internal and external) tapered shim. has to be cr-mo or something else of similar quality as the shim ends up quite thin, but you can then use the same ball joint. I have done this on my truck, once the joint has been torqued up once, the shim will never ever leave the tapered hole.
I took the lux for its maiden voyage and let me tell you it is 100%
better off-road. Sooooo much softer and I can't beleive how easy
it is to turn now! Even with both lockers on, I can still pick my line.
It made several really hard steps (that I had trouble on before) easily!
And the amount of extra travel in the front is awesome.
I'd reckon at least 4-5" of extra down-travel. Sweeeeeet.
And the install is top-notch, I SMASHED the hangers on a rock ledge,
no bendage at all, Just a big chunk out of the rock!
All in all - VERY happy chappy!
