Axle retainer plates for sierra

Post by lump_a_charcoal »

OK -

Does anyone have the know how to make a pair of these for me?

You know the ones that don't require brakes to be removed to pull an axle?

I made a set years ago from two sets of backing plates, its quite easy.
First set get the centre cut out to allow bearing to slip through, these will hold the brakes and I used uerathane to seal them to the housing and it also held them in place when the bolts were removed. The second set get cut outside the bolt holes and will be put on the axle before bearing as per normal. Then the bolts go through both sets of plates with normal sealer between the two.

Something else I also did was to weld some light tube on the end of the last plate, I then had a small area of the axle machined down a little and fitted a seal in there. This gave me an external seal on the axle stopping mud and water getting in and it meant not having to replace bearing every 3 months ;)
