im thinking about picking up a 1996 landrover disco v8 just wanting some back ground on these
how big a v8 are we talking for a 1996?
whats feul consumption like on normal petrol as well as gas?
anything major to look out for wether it mechanical or electrical
whats a good price for these to pay
one im loooking at has 240,000+ ks

1995 land rover disco on 265 muddies
Only V8 in 96 was the 3.9ltr in either manual or auto, bottom end of the V8's are pretty sturdy but usually require cam/lifters/chain etc sometime after 200k but mileage varies with maintenance. Economy i cant you with but are no worse than a 4.2 patrol, they are a lot of car for the money which is roughly 3G for a roughie up to 10-12k for a top of the line model with full leather and electrics. Not really problematic with rust but are known to rust around the alpine windows ( oval ones in roof) and in the floor pans if suffering from a leaking heater core. Try and find 1 on gas if you can and preferably with underfloor twin tank setup so boot area is free of gas tanks.

Hope im not hijacking. Im also looking at getting into something better than an MQ patrol, trying to please the lady in my life and hopefully get her to appreciate 4wding and turing. The discovery as i search is a massive amount of vehicle for the $$$. im looking at 94-98 v8, just wondering what is the way to go manual or auto. I have worked with ZF auto's before and seem the goods. i have only had one quick look under a discovery, the diffs seemed a little small, cv's ect ect and could be a weak point with 35's (compared to the patrols and cruisers).
In compareson to patrols and cruisers are aftermarket upgrades and opptions readily available (bare in mind i have an MQ SWB atm and upgrades are nothing to brag about). Looking to create a weekend turer that is cappabile enough to play with the big boys.

Auto is the pick as they are effortless, diffs are weak for anything over 32" tyres but you dont need 35's like the lc/pootrol need to pull their lard arses up hills. Very comfy car for a daily driver and tourer and not too big for the missus to park in a shopping centre.
For matthewk, scuba tanks are not too bad as they still give plenty of space, my pick is the twin underfloor tanks but these add at least 1k to an lpg install.

and dont worry about oil, they all leak
anything i need to worrie about?
i went and looked at it, look pritty good nic inside and out sounded pritty nice no noise in the motor while it was running did take it for a spin, show me the 4x4 system in 4x4 low did jump out once guy said ya have to push it in hard other wise they jump??
he put new radiator pastic filler thing
new start motor
gas was in date still has a few years
couldnt see much around the windo seals aprt from one small slight buble
told me he could get to lakes an back in under half a tank of petty for him was 202ks one way,
sound pritty normal for gas 350-450 odd ks for 70L

They are constant 4wd. The should not jump out of low and should not need to be pushed in hard - this definitely not normal.
Some people don't use low often and mud etc can build up around the linkage - they have problem with stiff linkage and not engaging properly. In these cases a good clean of the area and liberal use of WD40 (or similar) will generally fix.
Other reasons could be adjustment of the linkage or wear of pivot bushes (generally not a problem even though they are plastic). Or the lever could be hitting the console surround (common after a body lift).
If it is due to wear of dog teeth inside t/case, it would be $$$.
Not completely sure what you mean by radiator plastic filler thing. Some of the black expansion tanks leak from seams (the white replacements are better).
The plastic plugs in the thermostat housing and radiator tank were a BAD Land Rover idea - it is highly recommended to replace them with brass plugs. The plastic ones can break while trying to unscrew them and leave you stranded (not easy or quick to get the broken plastic out). These are not normal fillers - use the cap on the expansion tank.
Edit: With the comment about air flow meter. There have been different systems used in early and late efi systems in rovers. None of which I know anything about. But I have heard that some (early system) damage the air flow meter $$$ due to back fire when running on gas. Others here will know more about this.
