My winch drum has suffered over the years from its initial steel cable, have machined it, but also want to protect the synthetic rope from rust etc etc.
Question is - is there anything wrong with plain old powdercoating on the drum ? It was painted but that's obviously now gone.
And a general comment ..... the steel cable had done a surprising amount of damage to the stays between motor and gearbox. Cut though the plating virtually over the entire length of the top stay and worn the underlying steel by about 2mm in a number of spots. Even the bottom stay showed some signs of damage.....
Have now been replaced with stainless ones with a plastic "roller" ( PVC conduit actually ) over the top, once again to protect the synthetic rope.

Winch Drum - Powdercoat ?
( usual disclaimers )
It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

There's powdercoating and then there's powdercoating. MM if you have a good contact and you well may then it might be worthwhile but I must admit that a lot of the powdercoaters don't seem to know how to do their job properly. If done correctly flaking should and would not be an issue and it should be fairly durable. With correct prep and baking it should be fine.

not a good idea to powdercoat. how about zinc coating/ anodizing/ electroplating i have found this to work a treat, plus you should not leave your rope spooled up. you should take off wash then store it in the back where it is nice and dry. then if you go out for a play put it on, then take it off when you get home....
build em tuff, drive em ruff.........
