Can't Get My Doors Off!!!!
Can't Get My Doors Off!!!!
Trying to strip my 84 LWB of all the hanging panels so I can repaint the sucker. Not a bare metal job or anything just an exterior recoat cause ATM it looks like a paddock basher
Everything except my doors and front quarter panels will come off, I cannot crack the screws in the door hinges etc.
I've been using a power drill in reverse and it's done all others easily (with liberal use of WD40) but what else could I try?
Perhaps drill the screws and try easy outs, but if they don't work I'm farked then
Any ideas? Also do the front quarters actually come off like normal cars?
Thanks. mj

third best is a grinder to cut a slot in the screw and use a big flat headed screw driver i believe.
Manual impact drivers retail for about the $30 mark and work really well if you are not blessed like those of us who have compressors.

use a grinder and cut them off and then use new bolts to put it all back together. Quickest and easiest way otherwise you'll spend ages stripping the bolt heads and bashing your knuckles, swearing, chuck stuff, lose the stuff you just chucked, have your neighbours stick their heads over the fence to see what the fuss is, yell at neighbours, cops get called, restraining order etc
So just cut them off
So just cut them off
Ransom note = demand + collage
I used a hammer and chisel make a little notch and start tapping away.
Once you get em to move they are normally quite easy to undo, the Suzuki thread locker is really really strong intally.
A bit of heat does wonders if you want to reuse the screws, The only problem I had with the impact driver was that occasionally a panel would distort if you got a little carried away with the "impact" part of the driving ..

Hmm, is this advice gleaned from personal experience of a similar situation Grimbo?

i used my welder and welded a tent peg to them works well but you might not have a welder
Most likey put enough heat into em to melt the threadlocker as well as waste a tent peg

Thanks guys
Nearly there Grimbo, just waiting to hear from the local men in blue
All good ideas but #*&$ it I'll cut em and replace em, I'm in that kind of mood I guess

The doors on my tin top took about an hour to get all 8 nuts off with the grinder technique.
My soft top took all of 5 minutes with the impact driver took off the doors screen and bikini bar and all the connecting supports.

i've wrecked a few out and you need to use a thin cutting disc and cut a deep thin line down the centre of the bolt and why there's still heat in the bolt you use a BIG LONG flat blade square shafted screw driver with a shifter on the square shaft, apply abit of weight on the screw driver and crack it with the shifter, then hay presto it's undone
but you gotta crack it quick cos the heat from cutting it helps ease the threads
trust me it works 90% of the time

This was a hack job, but they are all the more fun. Got the idea off pirate forum, when we had the same problem with a mates zook, and didn't have an impact driver, so instead of grinding a slot in the screws, we ground off the top half of the hinges on the door side(?) that way we could remove the door altogether when offroad. Made up a nice bit of pipe with a receiver on the hinge end and a clip on the latch end so we didn't fall out... looked the goods and served a purpose...
