i came home from work today after 4 hours of overtime and 2 hours in traffic to go to jump in my 2.8 diesel to go up to the shops cranked over then died in the arse.
i tried again with the same result.
seeing as it kicks over im thinking a fuel issue or a air issue but i have oil leaking from my engine so i am possibly thinking a gasket.
any advice? and my rego is due in 2 weeks so i have no extra cash to spare

The injector pump has a fuel cut off that activates to shut it down and power is cut to it.
Its possible its faulty or the ign supply to it is compromised by a faulty ign circuit. Have you checked the circuit diagram on my model its a black wire with a yellow trace.The solonoid is directly above the lines on the back of the pump. To check it get someone to turn the ign on and off repeatedly you should hear it clicking you can also peel back the rubber and check for power and that the power is still to it as it dies when your partner in crime starts it.
Its always good to check the simpler things first so check this and also replace the fuel filter it could be as simple as a blocked filter as well.

as stated , simplest things first. Clean good quality fuel. clear line from your filter to your pump just to trace any air if there may be. after that id try hooking your shutoff solenoid to neat 12v (dont get the one for the tacho) and try starting ti with it hard wired open. however if it fires then stops id say that more than likely its working and you have an issue somewhere else

Does it fart and cough? then die or just crank over?
Crank it for 5 or 10 secs with your foot on the throttle a little, cold weather does weird things to older diesels, glowing it twice may help, as has been said try the free simple things first.

i did this before i read your post and yes it has kicked over and is running
when i had my foot on the pedal while cranking it it eventually came to life, i had to have it revving pretty high if it got under 1k it would shake violently after about 5 minutes it came good, is this a normal thing for this situation or you think i should still get it checked out?

Mine does it from time to time, i know i have a glow plug that is not heating as good as the other and struggles to fire on all 4 because of this.
I'm not 100% sure as to what it is, could be a little air in with the fuel, mine isn't a daily so doesn't get started every day so i figure air gets in the lines somehow over a period of sitting for a week and causes this until it clears the small amount of air to be pushed out.
How much fuel is in your tank?
Cant hurt to get checked out, try asking in general tech, theres a few diesel mech's on here that will know exactly whats causing it.

mine has just started to fart an cough for the first time ive had it in 2years, the last 3 mornings i have glowed it 2 or 3 times then have to give it revs to make it start and it coughs a few times than comes good in 2mins or so if i dont let the revs drop back to idle.berad wrote:Does it fart and cough? then die or just crank over?

glow plugs? battery? just cause it can? its got 250,000 on the clock, this is the first time its done it in the last 60,000. im taking it down to NSW on property shooting end of next month just dont want to get stranded down there, and its farking cold down there, it usually snows.

It's because its cold and the glow plugs are struggling, new plugs would help, but i just glow mine 2 times and give it a little throttle and its right within 10 or so sec's.
Pouring a jug of boiling water over the plugs and pump etc will fix it if it won't start at all in freezing conditions.

i have noticed lately that when the glow light goes out on the dash i cannot hear (what normally sounds like a relay clicking) so i just glow it 2 or 3 times and it starts first or second crank. just wierd i cant hear the clicking anymore no matter how long i wait?SIMMO84 wrote:When you start it turn the key to glow it like normalbut dont start it when the light goes out, wait until you hear a very distinct cick from the engine bay and then start it, it will start better than it ever has before.

A good place to start apparently accoring to my mate the guru of all things 'yota!
