08 Patrol ST 3.0TD....
08 Patrol ST 3.0TD....
Hey peoples,
Just picked up one of these 08 Patrol ST 3.0TDs...Just waiting on delivery...
Now after purchasing this vehicle, I noticed a few bad comments regarding the 3.0l engine with them being referred to as 'Grenades'. Have the 08 Patrol got the same engine people seem to bad mouth or have they upgraded the engine? being that Nissan now only sell the 3.0TD and not offer the 4.2 etc... Am I up for trouble later?
Advice muchly appreciated.

i have seen within my dealership any such issue with the commonrail engine , the direct injection 3 litre that is now not made anymore on the other hand is a different story however blowups with them is a rare occurance now. your one will be a commonrail and you should have no problems with it. just make sure you always use good quality fuel in it as the common rail pump is easy killed with shit. , fuel filters are cheap insurance however genuine ones in your case are pretty dear
Beep. Beep. Beep.. Whats that sound? Oh Look Its Just Another ZD30 On A Tow Truck.. =)
What torque? Tighten it till it strips and then back it off half a turn.

Just an FYI.

I also know plenty of people with ZD30s that have had no issues at all either.coxy321 wrote:Just an FYI.

True. If you take into consideration the number of vehicles sold with ZD30's (maybe tens of thousands??), compared to the number of vehicles with "issues", its probably not that bad. However in this day and age you would expect a better hit/miss ratio.T_Diesel wrote:I also know plenty of people with ZD30s that have had no issues at all either.coxy321 wrote:Just an FYI.

Yes and no... I personally think it boils down to how the manufacturers deal with the problem. I believe that there are lemon vehicles in every make and model.coxy321 wrote:True. A client of mines son bought a Subaru WRX STi which was aparently quite unique in terms of the rims / colour etc and there were only ever two of its kind in Australia.
He had it on a hoist six months after he bought it and noticed some surface rust developing under the vehicle. He approached Subaru about it and turned out that the vehicle had been taken to a salt pan for some commercial shooting unknowingly by the Subaru marketing department.
Subaru replaced the vehicle with a brand new STi no questions asked.

Good one bogged, always the quickest with the positive comments aybogged wrote:
Jarrod, they are fine, just install boost and EGT gauges (which should come with all new high tech diesels) and a blow-by catch can to minimise the EGR mixing with the blow-by oil.
Enjoy your new truck...

Going by percentages through our dealership I reckon that ZD30 & TD42 engine rebuilds are about even under warranty. Considering that ZD30 patrols were about 85% of sales & the TD42 were less than 10%, it is obvious that 3LT patrols would look worse in the rebuild stakes. I have seen ZD30 patrols with over 500,000km on them with the original engine & no mods without failing & I have seen TD42 engines fail with less than 20,000km. Neither engine is perfect. I have seen 4.2 owner drive 3.o Patrols & say they wish they swapped to the 3.0 sooner & also the other way around. It is all upto what the owner wants.
Thanks for all your replies. With people smashing the older version of the 3.0TD engine and not knowing if Nissan had done their homework in removing problem areas, I guess I was a little worried about the new engines.
I have been advised to get an EGT guage and a boost guage etc. Will keep you posted when I eventually get my new toy.

You know what surprises me Jarrod? Is that you've waited until AFTER you've ordered the thing and then noticed the aformentioned bad reputation. Did you not hear of it before? And if not, what rock have you been hiding under?jakam04 wrote:Hey peoples,

Yeah... I could have done some more work on history etc, but I guess my faith in the Nissan gods were clouding my judgementSimo63 wrote:You know what surprises me Jarrod? Ive always been a Toyota fourby driver and havent had much to do with Nissans apart from the occasional slagging of mates who drive them... and now Im going to be one lol
Ive spoken to a few people and seem to get a different answer from each. In the end... its an Odds game.. as every model of car have had their share of people claiming their car is a lemon. The car is costing me $55k give or take a K or so with a few extras put on...

Jarrod sorry for the slow reply but in regards to using an inline pump no the commonrail pump is much like a regular diesels injector pump however the commonrail one presurises the fuel to B.S. pressures , so dont try and crack an injector line with a spanner for any reason strait after its been running or wile it is , you might only get to do it once if you do.
