80 series tow rating

Hey guys,

I am wondering if anyone knows what the change was to the 80 series that allows from 8/96 on to have a 3500kg tow rating but pre 8/96 to only have a 2500kg rating?

I was looking on the hayman reece website and i notice both kits have the same part number so i am wondering can you put a 3500kg tow hitch on an earlier 80? and if not, anyone know why?

the brakes didnt change did they from say 4/96 to 8/96?

I am just wondering what i am missing?
is there any chassis change?

and yes i am looking at a 4/96 which is why i made that example.

they got larger brakes in the update.

not sure what month/year that was though.

the brake upgrade to my knowledge was at the end of 1992.
so thats what made me so puzzled.

I believe it was purely a marketing excersize with no physical changes, done to keep up with landrover's advertised tow rating.

Someone else may be able to confirm this

may have been an ADR change around then that allowed the trailer mass to exceed the gvm of the towing vehicle?

Are you sure they didnt up rate the brake again in late 96 as the brakes on my old mans 97 are different to his earlyer 92 mod ...

The 97 has massive 4 pot front calipers with big vented rotors and the rear has big 2 pot calipers and solid rotors ...

His 92 had 4 pots up front but not as big and the rear only had single pot sliding calipers ...

If that was the case why wasent it done in the 80's as LR have had 3500kg trailer mass since the 80's and it then went to 4500kg when they intoduced the 130 which was mid 90's 94 if i remember right ...

My old 84 rangie has a towing mass of 3500 KG with 4 pot and solids up front and 2 pot solids in the rear and dual circut brake system which was miles ahead of anything else at the time .....

There was no changes to the 80...only paper changes...the competitors to the 80 would have warrented it...for instance, the disco came out with a huge tow rating....was it 4000kg's....on a side note, ARB offer as part of their service, a rerate of towing weight for 80's fitted with their heavy duty suspension...might be worth a call.

Twon i dont farkin blame ya if fenders were any good id be driving one (Flame suite on) as im a rover man but just cant justify them as they are the most uncomfortable thing ive drove in a 4x4 even my mates scat is more comfy than the brother's and mates Cookie's ...

As for the 2.5 TD's all 3 the tdi 200 and 300 and that td5 pizz poor BMW copy are all shyte yeah they mite do the job but for a deisel engin thay just dont have the longevity LR stoped making good rover when they stoped using isuzu engins thats why the army are refurbishing there fleet to go another 25 years ya just cant improve perfection just service it ...

definitely worth a call to ARB then if they can do that. are they qualified? meh who cares if they sign off on i its their necks.

sad note the 96 was sold 27 hrs after it was advertised. which was 1 day before i could get to sydney to inspect.

its not even funny how fast turbo 80s are selling now.
i wish diesel would jump 50c a litre for 3 weeks to put a few more on the market.
if i drive this hyundai getz i borrowed anylong im going to start sitting to pi$$ fairdinkum.

Do ARB really sell an uprated towing pack for the 80. I know they do a GVM upgrade for utes. If I recall if it is fitted by ARB directly before the vehicle is delivered new then the GVM is upgraded on the compliance plate but if fitted after the vehicle has left the dealership then it is MOD plated. Don't recall seeing any towing capacity upgrades though. Anyway if it does exist then it must also be able to be MOD plated but I have heard of several people chasing without success to get any sort of upgrade.

It is common knowledge in 80 circles that all that changed were brakes in 11/92, with no other brake upgrades or to my knowledge chassis changes. However I have read of people putting the later brakes on and trying to get Toyota among others to reclassify their tow rating without success.

i was also under the understanding that the upgrade was simply a marketing tool, driven by who knows what. I thought it was earlier than late 96 however.

As for the GVM upgrade i know a few people in the truck chassis mod game il make a few calls and see what the go is with it

there is a name of a company in Sydney that do the upgrades on lcool....here it is....

Just found this information.

A while ago I was looking for an engineer who would uprate my '95 model 80series from 2.5 tonnes to 3.5 tonnes towing limit.

I just found this person at Autosport Engineering, Flora St. Kirrawee - 9521-1388 who will consider issueing an engineering certificate ($550) and a blue slip ($86) on condition that the suspension/tyres etc are upgraded to his requirements.

He did say that fitting long range tanks, winch, barwork etc which added more weight would be taken into account in the final GVM and towing limit - so that may end up in a reduction in anticipated GVM - but at least you would know where you are legally and with the insurance company.

I believe some of us were looking into this earlier so hope this helps.
